“Super Freak” was written by Rick James and Alonzo Miller and recorded for James’ 1981 album Street Songs. James improvised much of the song’s original lyrics during the recording, while Miller later toned them down and received co-writing credit. The track also features backing vocals from members of The Temptations along with Canadian singer Taborah Johnson.
Released as a single in 1981, “Super Freak” became Rick James’ signature song, reaching No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 3 on the Hot Soul Singles chart, and No. 1 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart. Its legacy grew even further in 1990, when MC Hammer built “U Can’t Touch This” around its instantly recognisable riff. James and Alonzo Miller were subsequently credited as co-writers of Hammer’s song, which won two Grammy Awards in 1991. “Super Freak” was not James’ highest-charting Hot 100 hit, “You and I” reached No. 13, but it became by far his most enduring recording.
