What is the future agentic economy that Stripe (@patrickc, @collision) imagines as it pieces together companies like OpenRouter, Bridge, and others?
OpenRouter founder @alexatallah:
-People will buy more, buy things they wouldn't usually buy, return more, donate more because: “Once you build a really good product that targets the 1% of use cases that people aren’t doing, that 1% blows up into a much bigger percent.”
“This is constantly happening in AI, where the top 1% of intelligence tasks that people aren’t able to do themselves suddenly blows up to become most of their spend.”
Stripe's leaked investor letter stated that the singularity began on January 1st, 2026. What actually changed?
OpenRouter CEO Alex Atallah (@alexatallah) explains -
"If you go to our rankings page, there's a little button that says linear versus log on our tokens. and if you click on log, you'll see that, it was growing until January 1st, and then the slope dramatically picks up... there really was a change of growth, like acceleration that happened around January 1st."
"I told the whole company, 'Hey, something insane has happened. We have to change the way we work, and, if you're not using agents most of the time, like if you're using autocomplete, it's time to switch. We have to give ourselves more leverage here. it's out there and the tooling is just primitive'... in many ways it changed the company."
NEW episode with @alexatallah, co-founder of @OpenRouter. He recently signed an agreement to be acquired by Stripe for a reported ~$7B+.
This is his first interview since the news.
This one is a particularly full-circle moment for me. Alex was the first person I interviewed, back in early 2021, when I had started a podcast my senior year of college and he was building OpenSea.
Five years later, Alex has built another incredible company.
We talked about why OpenRouter and Stripe make sense together, and their shared belief that the future shouldn’t be dominated by one model or one giant lab. Alex thinks there could eventually be thousands or tens of thousands of models, and OpenRouter is building the marketplace and infrastructure to help people and agents choose between them.
What we got into:
• Why OpenRouter saw a real acceleration in AI usage around January 1, 2026, and why Alex told his company it was time for “no more autocomplete” and to move to agents.
• Why he thinks AI agents could be tied to most GDP growth in the near future, as agents start buying things and transacting on our behalf.
• An anonymous Chinese model becoming the biggest model launch in OpenRouter’s history, and what that says about how much model brands actually matter.
• Why the cost of an AI model will increasingly be measured by how much it costs to complete a task, not how much each token costs.
• How the internet itself may start being built for agents rather than humans.
• What humans will still want to own and create as agents take on more knowledge work, software work, and eventually physical work through robotics.
• And how Alex finds company ideas by looking for the bottlenecks between what models can do today and what they’ll likely be able to do 12 months from now.
Alex is a deep thinker and a one-of-a-kind company builder. I feel very lucky that I got to interview him at the beginning of my career, and even luckier to do it again now.
Hope you enjoy this one :)
It’s been a great tour so far n’ can’t wait for the next leg!!!
Tossed my cookies as soon as I got backstage.
Even I wasn’t sure if I was faking it or not.
