Last night, Senators-elect were taken to the National Archives to go see the vaults — and some of the most sacred documents of our country’s history. As a history nerd, this was a true highlight.

We were shown the original oath of office, signed by General George Washington, pledging NOT to support the King of England (there was no constitution to pledge to yet); original hand-edits by the Senate to the Bill of Rights and, just for me, the original document President Andrew Jackson signed officially making Michigan a state in 1837.
