The biggest split among the Iranian diaspora isn't over politics, ethnicity, or even religion.
It's between those who maintain active ties to the motherland and those who have let that connection die out.
Things like eating Iranian foods or jumping over a fire the last night of Wednesday before the New Year are commendable, but they don't count as an active connection.
This connection is maintained first & foremost by visiting Iran relatively frequently. This is pretty common for Iranians living in the Middle East, slightly less for those in Europe & East Asia, and less (but not rare) for those in Canada and the US.
Iran cannot be a place from decades ago or somewhere you grew up until you were 8 then never came back. If that's the case you have a memory of somewhere that doesn't exist anymore, not a connection.
You need to be engaged with society, and not just observing from far away but vividly experiencing it change with every cell in your body.
It is maintained through speaking, reading, and writing Persian. This part is critical. Not just some heavily accented, Tasmim Kobra level literacy but something that you are fluent in.
You cannot engage with a society without speaking its language. You will be handicapped without it.
The path to this connection can be found through different expressions of culture. For some it is Iranian cinema. For others it is sports. Regardless of which way you choose, having something you follow as a passion or hobby makes upholding this connection far easier.
It is not an easy thing to uphold, particularly for those who are second generation. But it is not impossible. And once you do establish that active connection, you will be greatly enriched, have your worldview changed, and have access to one of the greatest cultural legacies in humanity.
It will also fill you with sorrow & grief at times, but all real sweetness comes with bitterness.
The modern concert experience:
I just paid $287.98 for tickets + $1,267.89 in Ticketmaster fees + $368.56 in taxes + $80 for parking + $400 for two beers and a small corn dog
Great seats, though!
I could almost see the artist if I watched through my phone at 8x zoom.
something very strange about people writing bullet points, having ChatGPT expand it to a polite email, sending it, and the sender using ChatGPT to condense it into the key bullet points
@ScottAdamsSays A big part of the problem is that journalists used to choose their career to pursue truth, but in recent years many have entered journalism to be activists
A video was posted of Ukrainian nationalists threatening to expel ethnic Poles and Hungarians from the territory of Ukraine. Accusations are made of anti-Ukrainian activities by the Polish and Hungarian governments. 🇭🇺🇺🇦
I used to think <person> was smart. Then I discovered that he disagrees with me about <political issue>, and I realized he couldn't be, because no one who disagrees with me about <political issue> could be smart.
