Forget 6 acres, we will not allow the state government to take even 6 inches of Lalbagh for the disastrous tunnel road project.

I visited Lalbagh today to inspect the 1.5-acre site where land acquisition has been proposed for this tunnel. The Congress government plans to carve out nearly 6 acres of this eco-heritage space for the project - an act that would permanently scar one of Bengaluru’s most iconic green lungs.

Even more alarming, the proposed tunnel passes directly beneath the 3-billion-year-old Peninsular Gneiss rock, a National Geological Monument. Drilling through this ancient formation is not just reckless - it is ecologically and geologically indefensible.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) and feasibility study appear to be a copy-paste job - sloppy, unscientific, and devoid of credibility. No Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been conducted. Instead, vague theoretical excuses are being used to dismiss genuine concerns.

To make matters worse, the DPR shockingly proposes a commercial complex inside Lalbagh, at the tunnel shaft location. Building a commercial structure inside Bengaluru’s oldest botanical garden is sheer insanity - an insult to the city’s heritage and common sense.

Citizens I met today - morning walkers, environmentalists, and residents - expressed deep anger that no public consultation was ever held. Once again, decisions are being made behind closed doors, with zero transparency or accountability.

After the Silkyara tunnel tragedy in Uttarakhand, the least any responsible government should do is conduct a comprehensive safety review. But when asked to show the tunnel alignment and geological data, officials from the so-called Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) literally fled the site, unable to face public questioning.

I have directed the Geological Survey of India (GSI) to conduct an independent study and submit a report on the potential impact of this tunnel on Lalbagh’s geology and seismology.

This tunnel road project is unscientific, unnecessary, and unsafe. Bengaluru’s future lies not in reckless tunnelling under its green spaces, but in mass rapid transit expansion - Metro, Suburban Rail, and public transport integration.

What was clear today is that Bengaluru must unite. This is not just about saving a few trees - it is about protecting the city’s last remaining green lungs, its ecological heritage, and its future generations.
