Korean battery companies spent years making expensive nickel batteries that store more energy per kilogram

But cheaper iron-based batteries called LFP grew from under 10% of global EV battery market in 2020 to over 55% in 2025. LFP packs now cost 40% less than nickel batteries. Chinese maker CATL runs its factories at 97% capacity. Korean factories run at around 50%. LG, Samsung SDI, and SK On lost combined $2 billion last year.

World wanted affordable batteries, and Korea was not making them plus if yu hold edge in tech that show up in the Chinese battery how it outperforming even now they are 10 step ahead from everyone and focusing on what will come in the future :)

Korean companies built huge battery factories to supply electric cars But EV sales slowed, and their plants sat half empty. Now they are converting those factory lines to make cheaper batteries for grid energy storage instead.

LG Energy Solution landed over $4 billion deal from Tesla to supply storage batteries through 2030. SK On switched its Georgia factory from cars to grid storage. Storage market is expected to grow by 250% over next decade.

Korea wants to start making cheap LFP batteries But China makes nearly all LFP cathode material in world right now, close to 100% of it. China also controls 75% of purified phosphoric acid that goes into LFP cathodes.

In late 2025, Beijing put export controls on LFP materials and battery equipment. Korea only has 1 domestic LFP cathode maker, L&F, which just started at 30,000 tons per year.

Making good LFP at scale takes 3 to 5 years. China is already moving to sodium-ion batteries while Korea chases LFP

Absolutely pathetic Lenova..LCD display screen break - hinges twice in 15months.. repaired in jan and again break in 4 months. Worst is service level. Customer care gave me incorrect contact no 3 times and it took more than a hour to finally connect the local service centre
