Birds don’t have doctors. No water filters. No one to care for them.
When Sandeep Dhula from Punjab truly understood this, he made a quiet promise — something had to change.
For the past 9 years, he has been building homes for voiceless birds, placing food and water for them, and planting trees.
What started as a small act of care turned into a lifelong mission. Today, he has installed over 80,000 nests.
This journey began back in 2002, when he noticed birds were disappearing. The reason was clear — mud houses vanished, trees were cut down, and with them, the birds lost their homes. People even mocked him, saying he was making birds “lazy.”
But he didn’t stop.
Instead of just placing nests, he began planting native trees too — so birds could eventually build homes on their own.
And today, his village tells the story.
Every house, every pole holds a nest. The number of birds has multiplied many times over.
It’s a powerful reminder — even the smallest act of compassion can change thousands of lives.

For decades, biology textbooks have enshrined a simple rule: DNA is made by copying a template. After one enzyme unzips a DNA double helix into separate strands, another called a polymerase builds a complementary sequence, base by base, for each strand. Presto: two copies of the original DNA.
But new research into how bacteria defend themselves from viruses now shows this synthesis rule isn’t absolute.
Now, a team describes a bacterial enzyme that synthesizes DNA without a nucleic acid template, using its own structure as a guide.

Our immune system is an evolutionary masterpiece. Every day it protects us from the thousands of different viruses, bacteria and other microbes that attempt to invade our bodies. Without a functioning immune system, we would not survive.
One of the immune system’s marvels is its ability to identify pathogens and differentiate them from the body’s own cells. The microbes that threaten our health do not wear a uniform – they all have different appearances. Many have also developed similarities to human cells, as a form of camouflage. So how does the immune system keep track of what to attack and what to protect? Why doesn’t the immune system attack our bodies more frequently?
Researchers long believed they knew the answer to these questions: that immune cells mature through a process called central immune tolerance (see image). However, our immune system turned out to be more complex than they believed. Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi have been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance.
This year’s medicine laureate Shimon Sakaguchi discovered a new class of T cells.
Sakaguchi was swimming against the tide in 1995, when he made a key discovery. At the time, many researchers were convinced that immune tolerance only developed due to potentially harmful immune cells being eliminated in the thymus, through a process called central tolerance.
Sakaguchi showed that the immune system is more complex and discovered a previously unknown class of immune cells, which protect the body from autoimmune diseases.
