#Pakistan International Airlines selects former #Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde Gebremariam to lead post-privatization turnaround

Pakistan International Airlines (#PIA) has selected former Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Tewolde Gebremariam as its new CEO following the airline’s privatization and transfer of management control to a consortium led by Arif Habib Group. The appointment is expected to spearhead efforts to revive the loss-making national carrier through fleet modernization, network expansion, and operational reforms backed by fresh investment.

Bloomberg previously reported that Tewolde had been shortlisted for the role, citing a person familiar with the matter, with a formal announcement expected after the completion of required procedures. Arab News reported that the airline is withholding an official announcement until security clearances are finalized.

Quoting unnamed sources, Arab News said a senior PIA official confirmed that the airline “would not announce his name until all the security clearances are completed,” while a major shareholder described Tewolde as “a very capable person” who “has done a lot of turnarounds.”

Tewolde served as Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines from 2011 until his early retirement in March 2022. During his tenure, he oversaw the carrier’s transformation into Africa’s largest airline through major fleet expansion, route growth, and the development of Addis Abeba as a continental aviation hub. He stepped down citing health concerns, stating that he had been dealing with medical issues for nearly a year and had undergone treatment in the United States for several months, making it difficult to provide the level of on-site leadership required for the position.

His expected appointment is widely viewed as a strategic move to restore PIA’s financial and operational performance following its privatization.

As we repeatedly plea, the political unsettlement in #Tigray & overall in #Ethiopia; is caused by not implementing the #CoHA fully.
The longer it takes to implement, it is highly likely resulted another bloody war.
