More like homesteading should never have been an issue, folks. Homesteading was deeply tied to violence against Indigenous peoples—including land theft, forced displacement, cultural erasure, and, in many documented cases, murder and sexual violence. The Homestead Act of 1862 gave white settlers—mostly European immigrants—the right to claim “unoccupied” land (typically 160 acres.) But the land being offered wasn’t unoccupied: it was already home to Indigenous nations who had lived there for generations. It’s 2025. When will humans stop acting like animals? 😭
