Denver & Intermountain Railroad car #355 heads southeasterly down 17th Street in Denver, Colorado in the spring of 1950. Passenger service on the system ended shortly after this photo, and all operations ended on March 15, 1953.

The largest end-to-end interurban system in West Virginia was the Monongahela West Penn's (MWP) operations serving Weston, Clarksburg, and Fairmont.

Its main line of 49 miles was built to high standards and capable of carrying standard railroad equipment, which it utilized to handle some freight business.

The MWP here also contained branches to Wolf Summit (closely following the B&O's main line), Wyatt, Fairview, and Mannington. This scene, circa 1913, features the interurban's Mannington Branch at Barrackville (near Fairmont).

The MWP also operated the interurban system connecting Parkersburg, WV and Marietta, OH but never made an effort to connect the two networks.
The branch pictured here was abandoned in 1933, followed by the main line in 1947 (converted to buses).

Christening the General Motors' "Aerotrain," circa 1956. There were two demonstrator sets produced, powered by a 1,200 horsepower LWT12 locomotive (pictured).

One, each, tested on the New York Central and Pennsylvania but the single 567C 12-cylinder prime mover ultimately proved unable to offer sufficient power.

In addition, the cars were too light which resulted in a rough, jarring ride. Touted as the "future in rail transportation" the sets were later sold to Rock Island and quietly spent their years working suburban service until the mid-1960's. Photo colorized by Patty Allison.

Unfortunate that the series was misnamed. Grand Central is a terminal, not a station.
