I’m a Bukele fan, and I have often wished for a little of his governing temperament in my own country. A French Bukele with the nerve to restore order might indeed buy social peace in the banlieues.

But there is a rather large difference between San Salvador and Saint-Denis. El Salvador is overwhelmingly a single mestizo society terrorised by criminal gangs. France has spent half a century importing large populations from the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa, many heavily concentrated in precisely the districts Paris has the greatest difficulty governing.

Bukele had to defeat gangs. His French equivalent would have to restore state authority amid questions of immigration, citizenship, religion, assimilation and national identity that simply did not exist on anything like the same scale in El Salvador.

So yes, France could use some Bukele. Unfortunately, the French version has been handed a considerably more complicated country to repair.

Chapter 1: The Machine
