I have seen Austrians and Norwegian tunnel experts shit their pants seeing the geology of the Himalayan region. They thought it was impossible. Tunnels with greater overburden can be counted on a single finger of a hand.

Let me assure you that these are the toughest tunnels to be built anywhere in the world. Lot of science has gone into it with constant design changes at every blast.

Additionally, dewatering of tunnels is a regular phenomenon and is required throughout its lifetime, to reduce hydrostatic, pore pressure etc on the tunnel. You would be surprised to know how much water accumulates inside a mountain. It's like a river system of its own. Especially keep into consideration that this monsoon season has been one of the worst in the recent history.
