Smart contracts are supposed to be immutable.
So how do protocols ship updates?
How upgradeable smart contracts actually work (and why you should be careful with them) 🧵
Solidity Interview Q: What quirks does the Tether stablecoin contract have?
Tether (USDT) is not a vanilla ERC-20. It has several non-standard quirks that have bitten protocols more than once
Major USDT quirks
1. transfer / transferFrom may not return bool
- Old USDT versions return nothing
- Violates ERC-20 spec
- Contracts assuming bool == true can break
That’s why many integrations use SafeERC20
2. Centralized control (admin powers). Tether can:
- freeze addresses
- blacklist users
- seize funds
- upgrade logic (proxy-style)
From DeFi’s perspective: counterparty risk is real
3. Non-standard approve behavior (historically)
- Required allowance to be set to 0 before changing it
- Same old ERC-20 allowance race condition, but enforced more strictly
4. transferFrom can succeed but move less than expected
- Fees / blacklisting can interfere
- Always verify balance deltas, not assumptions
5. Contract upgrades across chains
- Different implementations on Ethereum, Tron, etc.
- Behavior is not guaranteed identical cross-chain
6. Not fully ERC-20 compliant by design. USDT prioritizes:
- backward compatibility
- centralized controls
over strict standard compliance
Never assume ERC-20 compliance. Always:
- use SafeERC20
- check balances before/after
- handle non-returning tokens

From borrowed gear to breaking barriers, India’s women ice hockey players have carved their legacy on frozen ponds.
In the biting cold of Ladakh, where the ice was cracked and the support even thinner, they laid down their own rink, one midnight layer at a time. They were mocked, sidelined, and told to quit, but they didn’t just stay. They scored.
Now, with a bronze at the IIHF Asia Cup, their skates have etched a new chapter in Indian sport—one built on grit, defiance, and generations of quiet revolution.

A big chunk of "decentralized" crypto is down right now because AWS sneezed.
Let that sink in.
If your infra collapses when Amazon has a bad day, maybe it's time to rethink your stack.
I’ve been preaching local-first, self-hosted tools for years.
