Today marks a significant moment, as democratic forces came together to defeat the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill in Parliament.

The BJP attempted to use women’s reservation as a cover to push through delimitation. An alert and united Opposition stood firm and defeated these attempts.

We are supporters of women’s reservation and it has nothing to do with Delimitation. Parliament passed this bill unanimously in 2023, which is now part of our Constitution.

We will continue to stand united to protect democracy and ensure every voice is heard.

The recently unveiled curriculum framework by the Central Board of Secondary Education, aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, is not an innocent academic reform—it is a calculated and deeply concerning attempt at linguistic imposition that vindicates our long-standing apprehensions.

Under the guise of promoting “Indian languages,” the BJP-led NDA government is aggressively advancing a centralising agenda that privileges Hindi while systematically marginalising India’s rich and diverse linguistic heritage. The so-called three-language formula is, in reality, a covert mechanism to expand Hindi into non-Hindi speaking regions.

For students in southern states, this framework effectively translates into compulsory Hindi learning. Yet, where is the reciprocity? Will students in Hindi-speaking states be mandated to learn Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam—or even languages like Bengali and Marathi? The complete absence of such clarity exposes the one-sided and discriminatory nature of this policy.

The irony is stark and unacceptable. The same Union government that has failed to make Tamil a mandatory language in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan schools—and has consistently failed to appoint adequate Tamil teachers—now seeks to lecture states on promoting Indian languages. This is not commitment; this is rank hypocrisy.

Does the Union government have any understanding of ground realities—of teacher availability, training capacity, and infrastructure? Where are the qualified teachers to implement this sweeping exercise? And crucially, where is the funding to support this enormous burden on the education system? This appears to be yet another ill-conceived policy announced without planning, resources, or accountability.

This is not merely a question of language—it is a question of fairness, federalism, and equal opportunity. By structurally privileging Hindi-speaking students, this policy risks creating entrenched advantages in higher education and employment, further widening regional disparities.

At a time when the world is moving forward at an unprecedented pace, our children must be prepared for the future. The priority should be to equip them with skills in emerging sectors like artificial intelligence, AVGC (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics), and to strengthen scientific temper and critical thinking. Instead, this regressive and rigid language burden threatens to derail their progress.

The Union government appears determined to impose Hindi, brushing aside the legitimate, consistent, and democratic concerns raised by Tamil Nadu and several other states. This approach is a direct affront to the principles of cooperative federalism and an insult to the linguistic identity of millions of Indians.

India’s strength lies in its diversity—not in enforced uniformity. Any attempt to disturb this delicate balance is not just misguided; it is dangerous. Such policies strike at the very foundation of our pluralistic nation and will be firmly opposed.

Does the Thiru Palaniswami-led AIADMK and its NDA allies in Tamil Nadu subscribe to this imposition? Or will they, for once, stand up for the rights, identity, and future of our students?

I welcome Prime Minister @narendramodi finally opening his mouth on the proposed delimitation exercise. This sudden concern for “reassuring” southern states appears less like statesmanship and more like election-driven messaging, timed conveniently with political calculations in states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Let us be clear: the issue has never been about whether the number of Lok Sabha seats of southern states increases. The concern is about how they increase - and who benefits disproportionately.

Under the proposed expansion, while every state may see an increase, the rate and scale of increase clearly favour BJP-dominated states. Uttar Pradesh is expected to go from 80 to 120 seats (+40), Maharashtra from 48 to 72 (+24), Bihar from 40 to 60 (+20), Madhya Pradesh from 29 to 43–44 (+14–15), Rajasthan from 25 to 37–38 (+12–13), and Gujarat from 26 to 39 (+13).

In contrast, southern states see smaller gains. Karnataka rises from 28 to 42 (+14), Tamil Nadu from 39 to 58–59 (+20), Andhra Pradesh from 25 to 37–38 (+12–13), Telangana from 17 to 25–26 (+8–9), and Kerala from 20 to 30 (+10).

The numbers are telling. Five southern states together gain barely 63–66 additional seats, while just these seven BJP-dominated states gain about 128–131 seats - nearly double.

Even after expanding the Lok Sabha to 816 seats, the collective share of southern states remains around 24% - unchanged and already modest. States that performed better in population control and governance are being penalised, and Karnataka - a key driver of national growth - risks being deliberately sidelined. If our share does not improve while the numerical dominance of larger states grows, what exactly is Karnataka gaining from this exercise?

The result is a widening imbalance. Today, Uttar Pradesh has 52 more seats than Karnataka - this gap will increase to 78. Maharashtra’s lead over Karnataka will expand from 20 to 30 seats. This is not just expansion; it is concentration of power.

This is not cooperative federalism - this is another blatant assault on federalism, designed to concentrate power and silence states like Karnataka. Having failed to win the trust of southern people, the Modi Government is now attempting to weaken our voice through a manipulative restructuring of representation.

Such a structural change cannot be pushed without consultations or public debate. At a time of economic and global challenges, the Union Government is more focused on political arithmetic over national priorities.

The people of Karnataka - and all who believe in federalism - deserve fairness, respect, and transparency. We will firmly oppose any attempt to weaken our voice.
