Ask anyone here or abroad as to what led to the 1962 Indo-cheen war? The most common answer would be related to a boundary dispute, be it Nehru's Forward Policy or Chinese expansionism. What most of us don't realise is the fact that it was a deliberate ploy by the CIA to create a rift and mistrust between India and cheen by supporting an uprising inside Tibet, with a hope that a clash or tension between the two would propel India towards the West. Even pro-India POTUS, Kennedy, was convinced by the CIA to let the game continue.
The Russians, smelling the rat, tried to counsel the cheeni against an adventure against India, but Mao uttered the famous words, 'Will crush Nehru.' That led to a rift between the USSR and cheen. What happened thereafter, when Nehru began to beg Kennedy, vindicated the CIA plan.
