Over the past five years, Nifty has surged around 100%, this is mainly through gap-ups.

The intraday movements have played a negligible role the upmove.

Key Observations from five-year OHLC data of Nifty. (1232 Days)

1. The likelihood of the market moving downward after the opening is higher, with a 52% probability of a decline compared to a 48% chance of an upward movement.

2. In intraday trading, the intensity of downward moves tends to be greater than that of upward moves. (-0.69% v/s 0.59%)

3. In Overnight, there is a significant probability of a gap-up (70% versus 30%).

4. While the average gap down is slightly higher than the average gap up, the probability is lower (-0.55% versus 0.44%).

5. The difference between the average gap up and gap down is much smaller than the difference between the average upward and downward moves during intraday trading.

6. In essence, Nifty's substantial 100% gain over the last five years can be attributed only to the occurrence of gap-ups in the market.
