The last time India finished an Asian Games athletics campaign with ZERO gold was in 1990 and 1994.

Read that again.

Athletics has historically been one of India’s strongest Asian Games sports — 85 gold medals, putting India among the top three nations historically in Asian Games athletics.

So how are we struggling to find even ONE Asian champion in 2026?

Yes, there have been some excellent individual performances, silvers and bronzes. But for one of India’s strongest disciplines to potentially finish an Asian Games with ZERO gold, this demands serious introspection.

Injuries? Preparation? Athlete management? Competition planning? National-level development? Federation decisions?

And if weather, conditions or scheduling are being cited — weren’t those conditions the same for athletes from other Asian countries too?

So where exactly is the problem?

AFI needs to answer. The Sports Ministry needs to ask questions. And sports media needs to keep asking them.

How has Indian athletics reached a point where even an Asian Games gold is becoming so difficult?
