The indigenously designed and built Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam has attained criticality.

This advanced reactor, capable of producing more fuel than it consumes, reflects the depth of our scientific capability and the strength of our engineering enterprise. It is a decisive step towards harnessing our vast thorium reserves in the third stage of the programme.

What's happening in the Gulf is a reminder of how critically dependent India is on a single region for most of its energy. Most of our crude and natural gas (LPG, CNG) is imported, and our vulnerability to disruption in these imports is obvious.

As the saying goes, never waste a good crisis. Now is when we should focus on alternatives like biogas, which we can produce locally and is also more environmentally friendly. India is currently tapping less than 1% of its biogas production potential. It is also important to continue efforts, even after the crisis has passed, to build long-term resilience.

Through @Rainmatterin, we've backed a few companies — Farmwatt, Akshaykalpa, Hasirudala, and Wisebin — that are working to make biogas more mainstream. But the investment needed to actually move the needle is far larger than what a few startups can absorb. This one needs policy and capital at scale.

Statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry regarding the armed aggression of the United States and Israel against Iran

On the morning of February 28, the armed forces of the United States and Israel began airstrikes on Iranian territory.

The scale and nature of the military-political and propaganda preparations preceding this reckless move, including the deployment of a large US military force to the region, leave no doubt that this was a pre-planned and unprovoked act of armed aggression against a sovereign and independent UN member state, in violation of the fundamental principles and norms of international law.

It is also condemnable that the attacks are once again being carried out under the guise of a renewed negotiation process, ostensibly designed to ensure long-term normalization of the situation around the Islamic Republic, and despite signals conveyed to the Russian side that the Israelis have no interest in a military confrontation with the Iranians.

The international community, including the leadership of the UN and the IAEA, must immediately provide an objective and uncompromising assessment of these irresponsible actions aimed at undermining peace, stability, and security in the Middle East.

Washington and Tel Aviv have once again embarked on a dangerous adventure that is rapidly bringing the region closer to a humanitarian, economic, and possibly radiological catastrophe.

The aggressors' intentions are clear and have been declared quite openly: to destroy the constitutional order and the leadership of an undesirable state that has refused to submit to the dictates of force and hegemony. Responsibility for the negative consequences of this man-made crisis, including the unpredictable chain reaction and spiraling violence, lies entirely with them.

The grave consequences of these ill-considered steps for the global non-proliferation regime, the cornerstone of which is the NPT, are openly ignored. Meanwhile, the American-Israeli tandem hides behind a supposed concern to prevent the Iranians from acquiring nuclear weapons. Bombing nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards is unacceptable. In fact, Washington and Tel Aviv's motives have nothing to do with the non-proliferation regime. They cannot help but understand that by plunging the Middle East into an abyss of uncontrolled escalation, they are in fact encouraging countries around the world, particularly in the region, to acquire increasingly powerful means to counter emerging threats.

Of particular concern is the serial nature of the destabilizing attacks launched by the US Administration over the past few months against the international legal pillars of the world order, including non-interference in internal affairs, renunciation of the threat or use of force, and the peaceful resolution of international disputes.

❗️ We demand an immediate return to the path of a political and diplomatic settlement. Russia, as before, stands ready to facilitate the search for peaceful solutions based on international law, mutual respect, and a balance of interests.
