Every time you get a cancer biopsy, the lab makes a tissue slide that costs about $5. It shows the shape of your cells under a microscope, and every cancer patient already has one on file.
There’s a much fancier version of that test called multiplex immunofluorescence (basically a protein-level map showing which immune cells are near your tumor and what they’re doing). It costs thousands of dollars per sample, takes specialized equipment most hospitals don’t have, and barely scales. But it’s the kind of data oncologists need to figure out whether immunotherapy will actually work for you. Right now, only about 20 to 40% of cancer patients respond to immunotherapy, and one of the biggest reasons is that doctors can’t easily tell whether a tumor is “hot” (immune cells actively fighting it) or “cold” (immune system ignoring it).
Microsoft, Providence Health, and the University of Washington trained an AI to analyze the $5 slide and predict what the expensive test would show across 21 different protein markers. They called it GigaTIME, trained it on 40 million cells in which both the cheap slide and the expensive test coexisted, and then turned it loose on 14,256 real cancer patients across 51 hospitals in 7 US states.
The results landed in Cell, one of the most selective journals in biology. The model generated about 300,000 virtual protein maps covering 24 cancer types and 306 subtypes. It found 1,234 real, verified connections between immune cell behavior, genetic mutations, tumor staging, and patient survival that were previously invisible at this scale. When they tested it against a completely separate database of 10,200 cancer patients, the results matched up almost perfectly (0.88 out of 1.0 agreement).
Nature Methods named spatial proteomics (mapping where specific proteins sit inside your tissue) its Method of the Year in 2024, and specifically cited GigaTIME in a March 2026 update as a model that “democratizes” this kind of analysis. The full model is open-source on Hugging Face. Any cancer research lab with archived biopsy slides, and most of them have thousands, can now run virtual immune profiling without buying a single piece of new equipment.

- India achieved full indigenous Gallium Nitride (GaN) semiconductor technology for high-power radar, electronic warfare, and 5G/6G systems (DRDO breakthrough, only Russia & a handful of nations have sovereign GaN at this level).
- GalaxEye’s Mission Drishti: World’s 1st private multi-sensor (SAR + optical fusion) Earth observation satellite
- 1st country in Global South to build dedicated quantum materials labs for fault-tolerant computing (INOX + IISc collaboration).
- India now has end-to-end sovereign quantum hardware pipeline (design + fabrication + processors)...only the US, China, and Europe have comparable domestic chains.
- Indigenous 5G standalone core + radio access network stack developed entirely by TCS + C-DOT + Tejas Networks & deployed in remote villages.
- Largest vaccine manufacturing capacity on the planet - Serum Institute (still holds the title by volume).
- 1st private-sector quantum valley - Amaravati Quantum Valley foundation laid (2026)
- Vyommitra - World’s 1st humanoid robot "specifically" for uncrewed Gaganyaan precursor missions (female form, emotional AI).
- World’s largest deployment of plastic-waste roads - Prof. Vasudevan’s patented technology (used across dozens of cities, no other country matches the scale)
- 1st country to fast-track 5 indigenous SMRs by 2033 under new policy.

- India’s 1st indigenous CRISPR-based gene therapy - BIRSA 101 for sickle cell disease

- world's most advanced liquid/injectable cornea regeneration approaches (not a full artificial cornea implant like others)..

It hasn’t.
When I read about a research I was so curious to know what’s actually happening.
Fetal cells — carrying the child’s own DNA — cross into the mother’s bloodstream during pregnancy and never fully leave. They embed into her organs. Her heart muscle. Her brain tissue.
Researchers have found a child’s living cells inside mothers in their 90s, from pregnancies six decades old. The child left the womb. The cells didn’t.
And they don’t just sit there. They migrate toward damage. Women with heart injuries show fetal cells concentrated at the wound site. Women with thyroid disease show their children’s cells inside the affected tissue.
The body that built the child gets tended to, in return, by the child’s own cells. Nobody designed this consciously. Evolution quietly built a repair system out of the mother-child bond itself.
The brain side of this is equally staggering. Pregnancy triggers gray matter reorganization — a structural rewiring that sharpens threat detection, deepens empathy, fundamentally alters how a mother processes the world. These changes persist for years after birth.
Possibly permanently. A mother’s nervous system doesn’t return to its factory settings. It was updated by the experience of carrying another person, and that update sticks.
The part worth sitting with longest — women who experienced pregnancy loss carry fetal cells too. The cellular merging doesn’t require a birth. It doesn’t require years of raising someone. Those cells remain regardless of what happened after. A mother grieving a child she never brought home is grieving someone biologically still present inside her. The world consistently underestimates that grief. The science says we have no business doing that.
Mothers always knew the connection didn’t end at birth.
Turns out it doesn’t end at the cellular level either.
