Tribute | Dr Pramil Kunnur: My Ph.D guide takes a solo flight!
Writing tributes to teachers can be a very painful exercise for a student. I have gone through this process several times in the last few decades: First for my late Mother in 2007, who was a teacher, then for Guru Kalam in 2015 and later for my English Professor Ananthashiva Iyer Sir in 2018. And, little did I realise I must sit for another one on a Sunday morning battling both emotions and Bengaluru’s hostile weather.
My Ph.D guide Prof Pramila Kunnur (62) is no more. She passed away at her house in Dharwad on 6 Jan 2024 around 11 am. She had texted her elder sister Smt Ratna Kunnur, a retired banker, around 9.30 am and then later also had spoken with a Ph.D student. She was slightly ill and wanted her student to call her later. Post that, she asked her husband to keep the doors open and put the fan in full speed. Then she went into a peaceful sleep, succumbing to a heart attack. By the time her folks realised, my Prof had taken-off on a solo flight...
She had served University of Mysore (UoM) for over 27 years and was the HoD of Journalism Department in Maharaja’s College, before her retirement last year.
My encounters with Pramila Ma’m started in 2007, after my senior in Journalism Gautham Machaiah referred me for a talk at the Journalism Department of UoM. Later, thanks to my friend Prof Sapna Naik of the same department, Pramila Ma’m agreed to be my Ph.D guide.
And, this was the beginning of an extremely difficult bonding between an adamant guide and an ‘arrogant’ student. We had starting trouble big time. We had big fights. We hated each other. I was keen to get another guide and she was even ready to throw me out.
With my thesis topic being from defence, there were several disagreements we had; mostly arising from the lack of understanding she had of an extremely complex subject. It took her a while to realise and admit that she mistook my self-confidence in the subject as ‘arrogance.’
Every time, during the periodic reviews of my work, more than Pramila Ma’m, it was Prof Usha Rani Ma’am, doyen of Journalism Dept, who came to my rescue. Prof Usha Rani’s better understanding of aerospace and defence and her exposure to the happenings across the world, came handy for me to bridge the gap between me and my guide.
So soon, I became a very proud student of Pramila Ma’m! We had more fan-moments than fights. My visits to her quarters next to Ramaswamy Circle in Mysore were ever-inspiring. I gained her trust and for several of her initiatives I was her Man Friday. Sometimes, I felt my Ph.D thesis took the back-seat and her book projects, seminars, workshops and other ideas occupied larger space during our meetings. I was also her part-time tech advisor to fix a hanging computer, to format a pen-drive, to course-correct a presentation and many more.
Every time I set out to Mysore from Bengaluru for the thesis work, she would call and remind me that piping hot dosas and ginger tea was waiting for me. She would make calls to find out where my bus/train had reached so that she can start making the dosas. She had no problem in her senior student smoking outside her house. I had completed 20 years in Journalism when I was done with my Ph.D in 2012 and she would often introduce me to her students as Guru Kalam’s shishya! She was very proud of that fact, like my parents.
When I gifted her a saree after my Ph.D defence, it was for the first time I could see her becoming emotional. She knew it was perhaps the end of an eventful five-year-old-bonding. She also knew that my visits to Mysuru would not be regular now.
I haven’t ever missed an opportunity to touch her feet and seek her blessings every time I met her – whether she was at her home, at her department, or when I met her on the road or at the Crawford Hall, the citadel of UoM.
Among our many unforgettable encounters, the one that would be etched in my mind for ever is, the way she signed my Ph.D thesis. Like any other Ph.D student, the submission of the thesis is one hell of a nervy event. Because there are so many formalities, the submission day can be bit edgy even if you have ticked all the boxes.
I had carried all the copies of my thesis to her department only to find that she was missing. Calls to her mobile went unanswered. I had just an hour left to submit the thesis and then catch a train back to Bengaluru so that I don’t miss my office the next day.
I waited and waited and suddenly from nowhere she appeared. I was sitting on a rock inside the campus garden of Maharaja’s College, absolutely tensed. Pramila Ma’m had her seal and stamp pad in her bag. She signed every copy of my thesis with me holding it on the top of the rock. A thesis on the rocks!
I will miss that long call: “Anaaaanth. Where have you reached?”
Sleep well Pramila Ma’m! 🌹🌹 It will be my turn to make a ginger tea for you, when we meet next!
My pranams to you. 🙏🙏🙏

Again our Indian Army soldiers have been provoked by the Chinese.
Our jawans fought in a resolute manner and a few of them have been injured too.
We are one with the nation on the issues of National Security and would not like to politicize it. But Modi Govt
should be honest..
