I see a lot of "RW" accounts glorifying Indira Gandhi for killing Bhindranwale while trying to demean PM Modi.

The irony is that they conveniently ignore one important fact: Bhindranwale was politically nurtured by the same Indira Gandhi.

His killing wasn't wrong, he deserved to be eliminated. But what did India achieve by killing him that way? Did the Khalistani movement end?

No. It became even more aggressive, and Bhindranwale was turned into a "Sant" by many. He was made into a martyr.

Never let them die a martyr. That should be the principle.

This is where the Modi-Shah approach has been different.

Killing someone is the easiest thing for any government. The real challenge is to destroy their network, ideology, and legacy so completely that nobody even talks about them.

If Amritpal Singh had been killed, he could have become another "Sant" like Bhindranwale. Instead, he is living an isolated life today. He even reached Parliament yet, apart from his hardcore supporters, most people hardly care about his existence anymore.

The same applies to Naxalism.

The Modi govt could have simply eliminated a few top commanders and declared victory. Instead, it went after the entire ecosystem and systematically dismantled it. That problem existed even before Indira Gandhi. Neither she nor her son nor her grandson could end it. The Modi govt largely dismantled it within 12 years.

And where is Tablighi Jamaat's Maulana Saad today?

The problem with most people is that they either can't see the bigger picture or simply don't want to.

No country has the best of everything.

The US and Europe have built incredibly process-driven societies. Traffic rules are followed, systems work, public services are predictable, and most jobs come with a decent baseline pay. That discipline is what keeps the entire ecosystem running.

But every strength comes with a trade-off.

Having travelled across 14 countries, one thing I’ve consistently noticed is how process often comes at the cost of convenience.

Need something after 9 or 10 PM? Most stores are already closed.

Reached a restaurant 20 minutes before closing? Chances are they’ll politely refuse.

Have five people but a table for four? Adding one chair isn’t always an option.

Want a doctor’s appointment? You may be booking weeks in advance.

Even something as simple as installing an air conditioner in many European communities can require approvals from the building or local association.

India has its own challenges. We still struggle with the basic civic discipline, traffic, and inconsistent public systems.

But the flip side is convenience.

Need a doctor? You can often get an appointment the same day.

Need groceries late at night? They’re usually available.

Need to make changes to your home? You can often get it done without navigating layers of approvals.

Every country optimizes for something different. Some optimize for order. Others optimize for flexibility.

The ideal society probably lies somewhere in between, where discipline doesn’t kill convenience, and convenience doesn’t come at the cost of basic civic order.
