July 2026 marks the ECICโs 25th anniversary and a quarter of a century of supporting South African exporters and facilitating investments that contribute to South Africaโs economic growth as well as regional development. It is therefore particularly significant that the Corporation was recognised this month with the esteemed Capital Finance International (@CFIMagazine) award for Excellence in Export Credit Enablement Africa 2026. CFI is a highly regarded finance publication based in the United Kingdom. It publishes a quarterly magazine and operates an online platform featuring news, analysis, interviews, and commentary on global finance, sustainability, technology, leadership, and economic development. CFIโs editorial focus is on identifying organizations and leaders that contribute to economic growth and innovation. One of its best-known activities is its annual CFI Awards Programme, which recognizes companies, banks, investment firms, insurers, asset managers, and public-sector organizations across a wide range of industries and regions.
In an interview with https://t.co/41o0hb9jXi, ECIC Acting COO, Ntshengedzeni Gilbert Maphula explained how South Africa's target of lifting export value from just over R2tn to R3tn by 2030 gives ECIC's mandate a clear test: whether risk mitigation can turn regional demand into financeable trade. As a state-owned export-credit insurer, its role runs beyond insuring transactions to widening participation among exporters, manufacturers, emerging firms and black entrepreneurs where political and commercial risks deter private appetite.
Over the last 15 years ECIC has supported in total, 57 cross -border investments and export trade transactions worth about $4,8bn, spanning power projects in Ghana and Mozambique, mining, rail, manufacturing, telecommunications and road infrastructure projects. Afreximbank anchors its partnership model and ECIC has recently moved from Class B to Class A shareholder in Afreximbank. Other notable initiatives enabling South African trade, include the South Africa-Africa Trade and Investment Promotion Programme (SATIPP) which provides liquidity, syndication and de-risking and a risk-sharing arrangement with Japan's NEXI supports Japanese firms registered in South Africa and exporting across the continent.
Short-term credit insurance, cedable policies and bank-facility cover speed approvals and ease working-capital access. ECIC is also helping build the business case for a national export-import bank targeted for 2028, while a pipeline of about $3bn under evaluation, expected to close between 2026 and 2031, could generate roughly $1.5bn in South African exports.
