🍿 A wonderful opening for the second edition of the European-Libyan Film Festival!

Thanks to the partnership with the Ministry of Communications and Political Affairs, the General Authority for Cinema, Theatre and Arts, and the Embassies of France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, we enjoyed a memorable evening celebrating Libyan and European cinema in Tripoli.

The festival continues until 22 January, and everyone is invited:

Today we hosted a new edition of the #EU Delegation’s Media Freedom Talks, dedicated to the growing challenges of misinformation and disinformation.

Together with a group of outstanding Libyan journalists, fact-checkers and media professionals, we discussed how access to reliable information is essential for the exercise of democratic rights and for fostering participation. Fact-based, professional journalism, supported by a safe and enabling reporting environment, is crucial to advancing the Libyan political process towards free and fair national elections.

The message was clear: media freedom is a crucial safeguard for accountability, public trust and long-term stability. Independent journalism helps counter hate speech, prevents manipulation, and offers citizens the tools to make informed choices about their future.

We explored how the EU can help strengthen Libya’s media landscape through capacity-building and by supporting key media actors and institutions.

Yesterday, DSRSG for Political Affairs, Stephanie Koury @stephaniekoury1 met with the Chair, Deputy Chair, and several members of the Constitutional Drafting Assembly (CDA). The meeting provided an opportunity to hear their perspectives on the constitutional process and to explore ways of addressing the challenges that have hindered the completion of this milestone of the transitional period.

Ms. Koury underscored the importance of the national efforts undertaken by the CDA, stressing the need to resolve outstanding issues on constitutional matters. DSRSGP briefed on how the structured dialogue proposed in the political Roadmap announced by the SRSG Tetteh in her 21 August briefing to the Security Council could possibly help to address some of these challenges.

She added that UNSMIL is committed to supporting Libyans in overcoming the deep divisions through an inclusive political process that reflects the will of the Libyan people and leads the country towards national elections and unified institutions.
