ISLAM 1500–1800S CE: OTTOMAN CHILD ABDUCTION, BARBARY SLAVE RAIDS, AND JIHAD-DRIVEN ATROCITIES

By 1500 C.E., the core features of Islamic governance—jihad, institutionalized slavery, and the subjugation of non-Muslims—had become permanent structures across vast empires. The Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal powers did not moderate these practices with the passage of time.

They refined and expanded them using state power, naval technology, and religious justification. What schoolbooks call “high culture” and “tolerance” rested on the systematic theft of children, the enslavement of over a million Europeans, and waves of slaughter against Hindus in India.

The Ottoman Devshirme: State-Run Child Theft And Forced Conversion

The Ottoman Empire built its elite fighting force, the Janissaries, by ripping Christian boys from their families in the Balkans and elsewhere.

This regular levy, called the devshirme, operated for centuries. Ottoman officials swept through villages, inspected boys for strength and intelligence, and took the best ones.

Parents who resisted or tried to hide their sons often failed. The boys were marched away, converted to Islam under pressure, forbidden to speak their native languages, and trained to serve the sultan alone.

Many of these abducted children grew up to hold high positions. That fact does not excuse the crime. Jehovah’s Law in the Old Testament declares kidnapping and selling a person a capital offense.

The New Testament condemns those who steal people. Jesus welcomed children and warned of severe judgment for anyone who causes one of these little ones to stumble.

He never authorized His followers to abduct sons from Christian homes, erase their identity, and turn them into weapons against their own people and faith. The devshirme was not a cultural quirk.

It flowed directly from Islamic teaching that grants Muslims superiority over unbelievers and permits the enslavement and conversion of captives.

The Barbary Slave Trade: Jihad On The High Seas

While the Ottomans harvested Christian boys on land, North African corsairs turned the Mediterranean into a slave-hunting ground. Operating from Algiers, Tunis, Tripoli, and other ports, these Muslim pirates raided European coasts and shipping from the 1500s into the early 1800s.

Entire villages in Spain, Italy, and even as far as Iceland and Britain were attacked. Men were chained to galley oars until they died. Women and boys were taken into households and harems as domestic and sexual slaves.

Reliable estimates place the number of Europeans enslaved by Barbary corsairs at around one to one and a half million. The raiders operated with the blessing of local Islamic rulers and often under Ottoman authority. They framed their piracy as jihad against Christian powers.

Captives were treated as legitimate spoils permitted by Islamic law. Quran 4:24 and related passages allow sexual relations with “those whom your right hands possess”—female captives taken in war or raid.

Quran 9:29 commands fighting non-Muslims until they submit and pay jizya in humiliation. The Barbary system applied these commands at sea with brutal efficiency.

European governments sometimes paid tribute or launched limited strikes, but the religious ideology behind the raids was rarely confronted directly. Biblical teaching offers no such permission. Kidnapping is condemned outright.

Rulers are called to protect the innocent, not to prey on them for profit or religious dominance. The Barbary trade stands as one more clear expression of a doctrine that treats non-Muslims as permanent inferiors whose bodies and labor belong to the faithful.

Indian Conquests And The Pattern Of Mass Violence

In India the Mughal Empire continued and intensified earlier patterns of conquest against the Hindu population. Raids and campaigns involved mass killings, temple destruction, and the enslavement of hundreds of thousands.

One documented campaign alone saw 180,000 Hindus dragged away as slaves. These were not isolated excesses. They reflected the same worldview that justified devshirme and Barbary raids: the division of the world into believers and inferiors, with jihad as the tool to expand Islamic control.

By the late 1700s the Ottoman Empire was weakening technologically, yet it showed no sign of moral reform. The same Quranic commands and prophetic model continued to authorize child levies, slave markets, and religious warfare. The Wahhabi movement emerging in Arabia added another layer of puritanical jihad that targeted fellow Muslims deemed insufficiently strict.

Biblical Contrast Exposes The Root

Jehovah’s congregation is not built by abducting children, chaining men to oars, or slaughtering populations to expand territory. Christ sends His disciples to preach the Gospel and make disciples from all nations through persuasion and truth, not through the sword or the slave market.

He commands love for enemies and measures greatness by humble service. The systems described here operated for centuries in open continuity with Muhammad’s own military campaigns and the Quranic permissions for slavery and warfare against non-believers.

These were not aberrations. They were the consistent outworking of a religion whose foundational texts and history treat conquest, slavery, and subjugation as legitimate expressions of faith.

The real-world result across three centuries was empires sustained by stolen children, enslaved Europeans, and rivers of blood in India and elsewhere. That pattern did not end with the 1800s.

It simply changed its tools while keeping the same doctrinal engine.
