How many disabled individuals are capable of so much more but unable to function in today's society? How many are living terribly stunted lives because the majority puts them into a badly labeled box or holds them to impossible, unrealistic "normal" societal standards and turns around and calls them #DYSFUNCTIONAL?
How infuriating is it that people make you feel less than because they KEEP you in this box??
How many of you out there are #disabled but could be very #ABLE with the right #accommodations, the right job, more #empathy or #understanding?

I was so afraid but in the end
it was ok
Still coming down, away
Everything tried to tell me
but I was scared
I couldn't hear the universe
singing
To ease my terror
LISTEN

This is such a touching and thoughtful response - thank you. Others might disagree, but they don't know the challenges I walked into when I started my job & to be honest, I DID kick ass and hold my own, for a long time - and I did it WITH hidden disabilities - which I had to mask in order to be taken seriously by my supervisors and peers & to even be promoted to where I ended up. I did my job with a smile, while treating everyone with respect no matter how rude some were to me. This was the most difficult part, because rudeness was actually quite common & accepted in our workplace culture (for some, that is - if you were in one small group you were considered inferior & fair game for bullying or scapegoating; but heaven forbid members of that group disrespect the overlords!). The entire place was disgusting, masquerading as a pillar of the community, a champion of diversity. Of course there were a few good apples here and there, but there were also a LOT of worms.
@JoannaNoBanana That there is a gap in support. You don’t have enough money to live, but you have too much money to be helped.
Chronic means all the time = the pain doesn’t go away, flares happen frequently, disabling you more
How much paperwork there is needed to fill out apply for SSDI.
@ferriza@JoannaNoBanana I worked remotely for 3+years, then when I started needing more time off for medical, I was punished by having my ability to remote work revoked. Which completely wrecked my ability to work at all.
@JoannaNoBanana We can be the best workers, as long as you don't micromanage our disability to 💀.
Also, some days are good pain days, some days are bad pain days, meaning ALL days are pain days.. We guarantee the pain affects us more than our pain affects you, so maybe show some compassion??
@JoannaNoBanana That the gap between losing your job and successfully claiming your rightful benefits from US Social Security Disability can be more than 12 months and more than likely 3 to 7 years, depending on your lawyer and your luck with the Administrative Law Judge.
@JoannaNoBanana That someone can look completely fine while being intensely impacted by symptoms. And that kids with health conditions aren’t slacking off and just want to be able to be at school and doing regular things with their friends.
Dionne Warwick, upset with misogyny in rap lyrics, once set up a meeting with Snoop Dogg and Suge Knight at her home, where she demanded that they call her a “bitch” to her face.
Snoop Dogg later said, “I believe we got out-gangstered that day.”
