James Anderson has finally conquered Mount 700, becoming the first fast bowler to reach there. He is also a living embodiment of the adage of 'It's not how you start that matters but how you finish.' His beginnings were not so bright. Always.

In fact, his first delivery as a professional according to him was the worst he ever bowled. Playing for Lancashire's 2nd XI against Surrey's 2nd XI, he was so nervous when the ball was thrown at him that his legs felt like jelly when he ran in to bowl. The result was him falling flat on the pitch and taking out the leg and middle stump with his back leg. As he picked himself up to bowl again, umpire Ian Gould asked him 'What the hell was that, son?'

That fall was still playing on his mind when he was handed the debut against Zimbabwe at Lord's in 2003. If the nervousness wasn't enough, the hair-color had already got him some looks from the purists at Lord's. All of this was reflected in the first over Anderson bowled in Test cricket which began with him running in fast only to bowl a no-ball as his first delivery. By the time the over ended, he had conceded 17 runs to Dion Ebrahim who kept making the most of Anderson's straying down the leg-side. Captain Nasser Hussain, possibly thinking that starting with a fine leg against Zimbabwe could be construed as too defensive, went for an extra-slip instead and left the region vacant for Ebrahim to make the most of. Already nervous and now with the embarrassment of having conceded 17 runs in his first over with that colored mop, Anderson began to worry about his prospects.

At this point, skipper Hussain ran up to the bowler, put an arm around his shoulder and said, ‘Sorry, that was my fault. Start again next over.’ Anderson enjoyed the services of a fine-leg throughout the innings in which he ripped through Zimbabwe's batting lineup with a five wicket haul on debut. He has, of course, added some 600 more to that tally in the subsequent years. Who knows what would have been the case had Hussain stuck to his plans and wasn't humble enough to apologise to the debutant for what was essentially his fault. Also, I wonder how many who watched Anderson bowl that first over on that morning thought he would become the most capped English cricketer 18 years down the line.

Ps - Hussain wasn't so kind to Anderson on his ODI debut a few months ago where he made the debutant stand right below Bay 13 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground which is infamous for hurling down the choicest of words towards the opposition players, worse if you're an Englishman. Since Anderson's debut wasn't planned, he was wearing an oversized kit with no name and number and that just provided the perfect starting point to the Aussie fans for the insults to be thrown at the youngsters. Considering all the abuse the youngster copped, to return with figures of 1/46 from 6 overs doesn't look that bad.
