I have no opinion on the article, as I haven’t read it. But this phenomenon is happening because, with very few exceptions, the last 20 years has taught people that to be optimistic about tech is to be a rube

Those of us whose natural disposition is “this could be great!” looked stupid time and time again as the promise of progress was revealed to be a get-rich-and-get-out scheme for a few thousand people. Or a new way to mine our data. Or an environmental disaster. Or an illegal grift. Or a surveillance tool. Or yet another middleman inserted into our lives, driving up cost and then making our experiences worse

It’s utterly unsurprising that the people who write about it have started to end-run to the part where tech gets bad, where something cool gets co-opted by evil losers who seem to hate humanity

I wish it weren’t so, but Tech Optimism is dead, and it’s the tech scene’s fault
