The Salt Cellar of Francis I, a work by the Florentine artist Benvenuto Cellini — so insanely valuable that it was actually stolen and held for ransom....
This salt cellar is the only surviving goldsmith piece by Benvenuto Cellini. It's an incredibly refined work of art, considered a masterpiece of European Mannerism, made of gold, ebony, and enamel.
Cellini created it between 1540-1543 AD, hile he was in France, hosted by King Francis I.
The king gave him total creative freedom and access to the finest precious materials. For Cellini, it was the perfect chance to show off his insane technical and artistic skills.
The two main sculpted figures are the goddess Ceres (goddess of the earth) and Neptune (god of the sea). Ceres has her legs crossed with Neptune’s, and from their union, salt is symbolically born. Around them you’ve got other figures representing Dawn, Day, Twilight, and Night, plus four busts of young men symbolizing the winds that stir up both earth and sky.
On the sides of the salt cellar are the actual containers: a little ship holds the salt (coming from the sea), while a small temple with a triumphal arch holds the pepper (which grows on land).
Later, Charles IX of France gave the Salt Cellar to Archduke Ferdinand II of Tyrol as a thank-you for helping arrange his marriage to Elisabeth of Austria. It then passed to the Habsburgs, and since 1871 it’s been on display at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
That’s exactly where Robert Mang stole it on May 11, 2003. He demanded a €10 million ransom, and to prove he had it, he sent the only removable part: Neptune’s trident. Three years later, on January 22, 2006, the police recovered it (insured for around €50 million) buried in a small box in the woods near Zwettl, about 90 km from Vienna.
After the recovery, the thief turned himself in voluntarily. The Salt Cellar was put back on display in its original spot at the Vienna museum, where it’s still safely kept today.

Extensive archaeogenetic and community genetics research published in international peer-reviewed journals shows that both populations are not homogeneous (pure) and were shaped by different waves of migration....
The largest part of the genetic background of both the modern Turkish population and the modern Greek population (especially the Aegean islands and ancient Anatolian Greeks) is formed by the indigenous Anatolian peoples (Hittites, Phrygians, Lydians, etc.) who lived in this geography during the Neolithic and Bronze Ages.
The fundamental differences separating the two populations are subsequent historical waves of migration. Modern Turks have an average of 9% to 15% Central Asian/Eastern Eurasian (Turkic) genetic heritage in their DNA (depending on the region). In modern Greeks, this Asian heritage is almost nonexistent, while they exhibit a significant Slavic (Balkan) and Northern European genetic input that is absent in Turks.
According to genome projects conducted by Bilkent University and international consortia, the genetic structure of Turks living on the western coasts of Türkiye (Aegean and Marmara) is closer to that of the Greek population, while the people of Eastern Anatolia are closer to Caucasian and Middle Eastern communities, and the people of Central Anatolia have a unique Mediterranean cluster within themselves.
Research confirms that the two groups most genetically similar to each other are Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots; these two groups share a common island genetics from before the Ottoman period almost identically. Extensive archaeogenetic and community genetics research published in international peer-reviewed journals shows that both populations are not homogeneous (pure) and were shaped by different waves of migration.

Ma perché diavolo in italia non si riescono a costruire 10 carceri nuove magari nelle zone interne che sono praticamente spopolate e avere una situazione di affollamento minimamente civile ? Che vergogna

Stepping stones in Pompeii still doing their job after 2,000 years. The Roman city’s paved roads doubled as open-air drainage channels during heavy rain, flushing away any refuse downhill. Raised stones kept pedestrian feet dry while carts rolled right through. Roman genius!
