"The paradox of education is precisely this -- that as one begins to become conscious one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated." -James Baldwin
Why Many Middle School Classrooms Are in Crisis https://t.co/yWfzHxGsUl
We were talking about this topic recently-would love to know what you think, @JPhillipsVT
“‘Show students that it’s OK to be vulnerable,’ writes educator @AlexSVenet ‘By “modeling authenticity”—while remembering your role and professional boundaries—you can help students feel comfortable being authentic, too,’ Venet writes.” https://t.co/SbpcwbtSbW #vted
"Deep listening is an act of surrender. We risk being changed by what we hear." A delight to read Valarie Kaur's short reflection, Courageous Listening (https://t.co/hF1z2wMKc7). "The most critical part of listening is asking what is at stake for the other person." @JPhillipsVT
the emotional and cognitive facets of our brain—in today’s cognitive neuroscience, both are considered key ingredients of the learning cocktail.” -Stanislas Dehaene, How We Learn (2020) 2/2 #edchat
“Negative emotions crush our brain’s learning potential, whereas providing the brain with a fear-free environment may reopen the gates of neuronal plasticity. There will be no progress in education without simultaneously considering 1/2
@daffodilly@bookofthemonth (Also, I'm a middle/high school English teacher, and I have some 14/15 yo HS students who would also be interested. Any other nonbinary LGBTQ lit you'd recommend? Esp YA! Thank you!)
@daffodilly@daffodilly Would you recommend for a 13yo? My kid just joined @bookofthemonth and is leaning out of YA into adult fiction more often. Your book will def pique their interest. TY!
@Sheila_SouleVT Yes--watching the Merrick Garland AG hearings in the Senate this week, I was mortified to see the line of questioning from the senator from Louisiana--unfortunately, we still have a lot of "systemic racism" deniers out there; there is so much work still to do. #ANWSDCommunityChat
@bixby_library A5. Leadership needs to model transparent language about privilege and to create space (staff mtgs, PLCs, supervision, mentoring). If equity is on the table in a disarming and proactive way, there are clear channels to address grievances, + a shared vocabulary #ANWSDCommunityChat
@bixby_library @IjeomaOluo A4. Pt2. If we acknowledge the plurality of identities we each carry, then our movements should do no less. This also ensures movements for social justice are not inadvertently tools of oppression themselves--hierarchies within movements perpetuate inequity. #ANWSDCommunityChat
@bixby_library A4. Pt1. I resonated w @IjeomaOluo's statement about not being able to split herself apart, to isolate her various identities. Within each of us exist the intersections of many identities (race, gender and gender-identity, sexual orientation, disability, etc). #ANWSDCommunityChat
@bixby_library Yes, this is the main thesis of @timjacobwise who wrote White Like Me-- those yielding the power of privilege need to give voice to the inequities of the systems from which they directly derive benefit to realize true and meaningful change. #ANWSDCommunityChat
