How to be elegant (things I've learnt from my mom):

-Eat with a fork in left hand, knife in right, & never switch
-If you don’t know about art & you’re in front of a piece, say how it makes you feel
-Quality is always better than quantity. Invest in cashmere, wool, leather and good shoes
-Clean your shoes
-If you’re a man, shoes + belt must match
-Ladies, a black dress is eternal & always a good idea when you don't know what to wear
-Know your body shape & dress accordingly
-Stand when elders or women enter the room (we really need to bring this one back)
-Always serve women first & wait to eat until everyone has been served
-If someone invites you to have dinner at their home, never bring food (it's rude). Bring wine or buy flowers, a high-quality olive oil, a nice beeswax candle etc to gift the host
-Order wine from odd numbered years, smell the cork, swirl to aerate, sniff, then taste. And never, ever chug wine or pour yourself a full cup!
-Drink red wine with meat, & white with fish
-If someone compliments you say “thank you”
-If you’re a man, walk on the street side when you’re with a woman
-When you’re talking to someone, be a good listener & ask questions
-Make eye contact
-Remember people’s names
-Read the room & know when to leave a conversation and/or a party
-Own a beautiful pen
-Avoid oversized logos (that's very new money)
-Always be punctual (british time), never arrive late or too early
-For work meetings arrive 5 to 10 minutes early, interviews 10 to 15 mins early, dinner parties & everything else arrive exactly on time
-Treat all staff kindly & with respect even if they’re having a bad day or are rude
