We can’t thank Coach Walters or the SHS girls team enough— what an incredible experience for these future Spartans! And those varsity girls were 🔥on the field 💪🏼
In 2023, third graders only had to score 35% on the RLA STAAR to “pass” the test. Now please help us understand how data from that test becomes an accurate reflection of student learning?
Happy Reading STAAR week to all who (are required to) celebrate!
To honor this event, it feels appropriate that every Texas state legislator should take a STAAR test. (Link below)
Texas spent $388mm over 4 yrs on STAAR so #txlege should at least *glance* at it, ya know?
@MikeMorath I sincerely hope your entire team is painfully familiar with the rigor of each grade level’s STAAR test. And that you all spend time reflecting on how this assessment reflects instruction (you know, the whole goal of standardized tests)
In a year with a $33B surplus, Texas can’t even increase basic allotment enough to cover inflation.
@GovAbbott does this keep you up at night? Texas is bottom 10% of school funding. You could change that. Like it or not, you are the captain of this sinking ship.
Dr. Blaine has announced the remaining Phase III budget reductions to close the district's $35 million general fund budget gap for the 2024-25 school year.

Morath claims $7M in “new” funding for @SBISD. The “new” money is really just SBISD keeping a tiny bit more of the taxes we raise locally before we send our recapture payment to Austin which I’ll remind everyone was $80M last year. Our money and other district’s recapture payments then get laundered through the general fund producing a significant portion of the $30+ billion surplus our state government is sitting on.
Shameful to have a governor sitting on that money and neglecting TX students and teachers to play political games. @GregAbbott_TX
The commissioner of education gets a raise from $220,000 to $325,000.
Teachers get $0 despite Abbott’s task force recs.
TEA adds hundreds of employees.
ISDs get no increases to the basic allotment and lots more rules and regulations to implement without sufficient funding.
THIS IS TOO IMPORTANT! This will impact every single student and staff member in SBISD (and beyond). Please call and email the politicians tagged below. Your voice matters.
After analyzing phonic decoding assessments, we pulled targeted phonics small groups. SG1 focus was CVC blending and SG2 was blends. Ss used boxes to isolate each sound, blend sounds, and finally connect the graphemes to phonemes. Foundational literacy at work! #literacyinSBISD
G2 orthographically maps HFW during phonics. Goal is for Ss to be read (and write!) words accurately and w automaticity— we get there by attending to both the letters (spelling patterns) and sounds and mapping it into our working memory. #literacyinSBISD@SBISD
Spent the afternoon with kindergarten paras focusing on foundational literacy. We focused on the decoding portion of #SVR, thinking through small groups and connected it to the decodable texts 📚we use. #literacyinSBISD#everychild@caitlynt31
@MissNFriday demos a writing-about-reading strategy group in G3 at @ThornwoodSBISD and Ts turn around to try it. Using student jots as mentors, Ss notice & name ways to jot about NF reading…. And then try it! Beautiful, authentic work #literacyinSBISD
