Nigeria is developing 10 new sugar projects expected to produce 835,000 metric tonnes annually when fully operational, as part of a $7.1 billion, 10-year investment programme aimed at achieving sugar self-sufficiency and reducing import dependence.
The National Sugar Development Council says more than 143,000 hectares of land have been secured for the projects, while 13 new and existing projects are expected to deliver over 2 million metric tonnes of sugar annually. The programme is also projected to save Nigeria $2.1 billion in foreign exchange each year, while supporting ethanol production, power generation and job creation.
