The Rent Guidelines Board recently voted for a two year rent freeze on NYC rent stabilized housing
I was the lone dissenting vote
I've written two pieces here; which highlight the challenges of a rent freeze and where to go next

Hanging out with some friends I haven't seen in years, and realizing our phatic interjections/aizuchi have completely changed in the interim, to the point of taking some phrases as literal rather than conversational. Crazy to think about all the other small changes I don't notice
It really is the case that people in tech cities will be at nice dates in trendy cafes in beautiful weather and spend the whole time complaining about PMs and work. Or in a nice bar spending their time talking about what LLMs they prefer using.
I keep going back and forth on the importance of 'the freedom to die' or 'the freedom to fuck up', because it sure is convenient that right now has the perfect balance of convenience and adventure
When I go to an aquarium, I feel sad for the glasy-eyed fish, swimming around doing nothing, but they don't really think that much, and don't do that much in the wild anyways- they're probably thankful to be safe in a tank
For birds and mammals, it feels worse, since they can think, and birds have more freedom of movement. Still, it beats how bad the wild is, usually. Will machines over-sentimentalize our freer states, if we cease to be the dominant intelligence in the world?
I know that people are just checking their analytics, but I will never watch a video that says 'I promise this is interesting'. I expect you to have confidence in what you're talking about. Spruce up your title, if you must, but stand by it.
