THE END OF SADHANA

Bhagavan: Sadhanas are needed so long as one has not realized IT. They are for putting an end to obstacles.

Finally, there comes a stage when a person feels helpless notwithstanding the sadhanas. He is unable to pursue the much-cherished sadhana also. It is then that God’s Power is realized. The Self reveals itself.

"Mullaivasal" as R. Krishnamurthy Sastrigal one of the greatest scholars of the Vedas, Vedanta, and Sanskrit of our times and former Principal of the Madras Sanskrit College, who was honoured by with titles such as ‘Veda Bhashya Ratnam’ from Kanchi Mahaswami worshipped as Walking Divinity, with the ‘Rishi Samman’ by the President of India, with titles including ‘Advaita Siddhi Ratnakaram’ and ‘Vedanta Vibhushanam’ attained Sadgati Yesterday

Born in 1944 into a family of traditional Vedic scholars in Mullaivasal village, Thanjavur district he underwent traditional Vedic studies under his father and subsequently studied Mimamsa and Vedanta Shastras under accomplished teachers. He earned a doctorate in Indian Philosophy from the University of Madras with a thesis titled ‘Ishtasiddhi Vivaranam’. He founded the ‘Brahma Vidya Bhavan’ to impart Vedanta education in the traditional manner; there, he taught Vedanta Shastras to around 15 students and dedicated himself to moulding them into accomplished scholars of Advaita Vedanta. He also served as the Managing Trustee of the Mullaivasal Heritage Trust, established in 2000 to preserve and propagate Indian knowledge systems, culture, and traditions.

I came into his tutelage in 1980s. I said I know very little Samskrit, he introduced me to Samskrit LKG, and began teaching me Gita Bhashya of Adisankara! Being caught in various battles of Indian Express with the Rajiv Govt arrests and persecution I was an irregular student under him. But the fire he lit in me to pursue Vedic studies from the perspectives of science, polity sociology, history continued. I used to meet him to take his guidance.

He taught me about the concepts Rashtra, Rajya, Rajya, Raja and Jana in Rig Veda. These concepts were known but he told me something stunning. He said that the Rig Veda says that people should adhere to the interests of Rashtra, there should be no mutual conflicts between the Rashtra and people, the latter should underplay itself and Rashtra should shape the people to do that. This showed that there was a highly evolved polity. This made me distrust the historic view that Vedic people were patoralists who evolved from Hunter gatherers. He gave a note in his own handwriting which is below

I will narrate in the next how the fire he lit in me began shaping my own studies in the last 3 decades as I heavily invested in the study of Swadeshi approach to our overall develpment.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Ambal Kamakshi plays with Sri Maha Periyava

During Sri Maha Periyava’s camp at Andhra Pradesh, a Pooja was arranged for Goddess Kamakshi Amman and all arrangements were made for the Pooja. Ambal Kamakshi was dressed in a divine and soulful manner by the Sreekaryam people.

When Sri Maha Periyava was about to start the Pooja, He noticed that the saree of Kamakshi Amman was torn at the knee. But Sri Maha Periyava decided to go ahead with the Pooja without changing the saree. The Pooja was in excellent progress and a lot of devotees were assembled for the Pooja.

Unexpectedly, a lady beggar with her saree torn at many places came running and asked for a saree and food. Everyone in the crowd was about to prevent that lady from nearing Sri Maha Periyava. Maha Periyava instructed the people not to stop her but allow her to come near Maha Periyava.

Karuna Sagaran, Sri Maha Periyava asked that lady, what she wanted. The lady replied that she needed a good saree to wear as she had only that torn saree.

Sri Maha Periyava instructed the Sreekaryam people to bring a good saree, fruits and prasadam in a plate. The Sreekaryam people obeyed the instruction and brought the plate with saree and fruits etc and handed over the plate to the lady as per Sri Maha Periyava’s instruction.

Sri Maha Periyava with a smile blessed that lady for a good life. The lady after receiving the plate walked towards the road. One of the Sreekaryam persons was following the lady because these kind of ladies they never wear a good saree and they sell it outside for money. The Sreekaryam person was following that lady without her and Sri Maha Periyava’s knowledge.

That lady crossed the road and was about to enter into a temple and all of sudden, someone slapped the Sreekaryam person and he fell on the ground and fainted. The lady went inside the temple and disappeared. After some time with the help of passersby, he could manage to come to the Pooja place.

He was very much afraid to disclose this incident to Sri Maha Periyava. But Maha Periyava knows everything without anyone informing him. Maha Periyava summoned the Sreekaryam person and narrated everything from the beginning till he was slapped and fell on the ground. He pleaded to Sri Maha Periyava to forgive him for this act.

Sri Maha Periyava informed everyone that the saree of Ambal was torn and Ambal Kamakshi wanted to play with Him. So she played in this manner. Goddess Kamakshi Amman is down to earth to the true devotee and so is Paramacharya. Because,

Paramacharya is Ambal Kamakshi
Ambal Kamakshi is Paramacharya
Down to earth, is a not a surprise.
Because both are one!!!
