France's strategic counteroffensive in Africa ended in failure...

Today, the most powerful attempt to oust us from MALI took place. This is a strategically important country for us (and the enemy respectively) in western Africa and one of our main outposts in this part of the continent. It was here that our victorious march on the continent began. And therefore it is here that France (and the West as a whole) wants to oust us first and foremost.

For the past few years, a war with local radical Islamists and Saharan Tuaregs has been going on in Mali, which was inherited by the pro-Russian authorities of the country. Who, under the guidance of Western curators and instructors, have been preparing for one powerful attack all this time.

Which began early this morning and was simply well-coordinated and organized. It began with a simultaneous attack by thousands of militants on hundreds of motorcycles and pickups. Who attacked several strategically important points of the country - the cities Kati, Kidal, Gao, Bourem and Sevare.

Kati - a northern suburb of the capital Bamako, control over which would have allowed the jihadists to attack the capital. And at the same time, success here would have allowed them to tie up the main forces of our "African Corps" and local security forces (not allowing them to react to events in the east and north of the country).

Sevare - the most important junction of strategic roads in the center of Mali, control over which would have given the militants the opportunity to cut the country into separate parts and thereby disunite the government forces.

In Gao is a strategically important bridge over the Niger River, control over which would have allowed to control any maneuvers of forces in this part of the country, and in the neighboring city of Bourem is an important junction of roads. And joint control over these areas would also have given the opponents of the official authorities a significant tactical advantage.

And finally, Kidal - a major outpost of the authorities in the northeastern, desert part of the country, populated by Tuaregs.

And as I said above, today in the morning a simultaneous attack from all sides began according to a clearly coordinated and well-organized plan. And by lunchtime, all Ukrainian quasi-military information outlets (and we must understand that in Mali, mercenaries from Ukraine are working as instructors) were flooded with victory reports, as they, together with NATO, in one day threw the Russians out of Mali. Who, a few hours later, shut up and are now silent like fish (trying to understand how it happened that literally in a few hours the "victory" suddenly turned into a "betrayal").

Meanwhile, our units of the "African Corps", whose main base was subjected to an unexpected morning attack, went on the counteroffensive in the area of the capital and by the evening completely cleared out individual militants who had broken into the capital and drove out the enemy from Kati. And the second wave of attackers, the so-called "second echelon", which began to develop the success, having seen that the first attack had faltered and turned into a beating of the attackers, turned around and fled.

At this moment, as of this evening, the day in general remained with us. Practically everywhere we managed to inflict a defeat on the enemy, and the count of his losses (killed, wounded and captured) is already in the hundreds. If not thousands (who will now count them and collect them from the desert).

Importantly, the local defense forces, which our military have been teaching for so long, put up serious resistance, and despite the losses, did not abandon the positions they occupied. Unfortunately, our "African Corps" also suffered losses today. But given the scale of the battles, this was inevitable.

Un professeur du MIT a enseigné le même cours de maths pendant 62 ans, et le jour de son départ à la retraite, des étudiants de tous les pays du monde se sont connectés pour assister à sa dernière leçon.

J'ai ouvert la playlist à 2h du matin et j'ai fini par enchaîner trois cours d'affilée.

Il s'appelle Gilbert Strang. Le cours, c'est MIT 18.06 Linear Algebra.

Chaque ingénieur en machine learning, chaque data scientist, chaque quant, chaque autodidacte qui comprend vraiment comment fonctionne l'IA a appris les maths grâce à cet homme. La plupart n'ont jamais mis les pieds sur le campus du MIT. Ils ont juste ouvert une playlist gratuite sur YouTube et l'ont laissé enseigner.

Voici l'histoire que presque personne ne raconte.

Strang a rejoint le département de math��matiques du MIT en 1962. Il est parti à la retraite en 2023. Soit 61 ans passés devant le même tableau noir à enseigner la même matière à des étudiants de 18 ans.

Le plus intéressant, c'est ce qu'il a fait quand le MIT a lancé OpenCourseWare en 2002. La plupart des professeurs étaient sceptiques. Ils craignaient que mettre leurs cours en ligne ne rende leurs salles de classe obsolètes. Strang, lui, n'a pas hésité une seconde. Il a dit que la mission de sa vie était d'ouvrir les mathématiques aux étudiants du monde entier. Il a filmé chaque cours et l'a offert.

Cette décision a discrètement changé la façon dont le monde apprend les maths.

Pendant des décennies, l'algèbre linéaire a été enseignée à l'envers. Les professeurs commençaient par des espaces vectoriels abstraits et des démonstrations sur les axiomes de corps. Les étudiants se noyaient dans l'abstraction. La plupart ne s'en remettaient jamais. Ils repartaient en pensant qu'ils étaient mauvais en maths, alors qu'on leur avait simplement enseigné dans un ordre que personne n'est câblé pour absorber.

Strang a inversé tout le programme.

Il commençait par la multiplication matricielle. Quelque chose qu'on peut écrire sur une feuille. Quelque chose qu'on peut calculer à la main. Quelque chose qu'on peut voir. Puis il montrait à ses étudiants que tout le reste de l'algèbre linéaire — les vecteurs propres, la décomposition en valeurs singulières, l'orthogonalité, les quatre sous-espaces fondamentaux — n'était qu'une autre façon de comprendre ce que la matrice faisait réellement sous le capot.

Sa règle était stricte. Si un étudiant ne pouvait pas expliquer un concept avec un exemple concret en 3x3, c'est qu'il ne le comprenait pas encore vraiment. L'abstraction devait venir en dernier, pas en premier. L'intuition était la fondation. Les démonstrations n'étaient que la confirmation que l'intuition était juste.

La deuxième chose que Strang a changée, c'est la salle de classe elle-même. Il disait s'il vous plaît et merci à ses étudiants. À chaque cours. Il interrompait une démonstration pour demander « ça va ? », histoire de vérifier que personne n'était perdu. Il n'utilisait jamais les mots « évidemment » ou « trivialement », parce qu'il savait exactement l'effet que ces mots produisent sur un étudiant qui a un train de retard. Il traitait des jeunes de 19 ans qui découvraient les maths comme il traitait ses propres collègues. Avec patience. Avec respect. Avec le postulat qu'ils avaient leur place dans la salle.

Pendant 62 ans.

Le résultat, c'est quelque chose qui ne s'était jamais produit dans l'histoire de l'éducation. Un seul professeur de maths est devenu le prof par défaut de sa matière pour la planète entière.

Des universités en Inde, en Chine, au Brésil, au Nigeria, dans tous les pays avec un département d'informatique, se sont mises à dire à leurs propres étudiants de simplement regarder les cours de Strang. L'université de l'Illinois a revu son cours d'algèbre linéaire pour réduire l'enseignement en présentiel au strict minimum. La raison invoquée était honnête. Le professeur a dit qu'ils ne pouvaient pas rivaliser avec les vidéos.

Son dernier cours a eu lieu en mai 2023.

L'amphithéâtre était bondé d'étudiants qui ne l'avaient jamais rencontré. Il s'est avancé vers le tableau, a enseigné pendant une heure, et à la fin, toute la salle s'est levée pour l'applaudir. Il a paru perplexe un instant, comme s'il ne comprenait sincèrement pas pourquoi on l'acclamait. Puis il a souri, leur a fait signe d'arrêter et est sorti.

Son commentaire écrit sous la vidéo YouTube de ce dernier cours faisait quatre phrases. Il disait qu'enseigner avait été une vie merveilleuse. Il disait qu'il était reconnaissant envers tous ceux qui avaient compris l'importance de l'algèbre linéaire. Il disait que le mouvement consistant à bien l'enseigner continuerait, parce que c'était la bonne chose à faire.

C'est tout. Pas de promotion de livre. Pas de discours d'adieu. Aucune gestion d'héritage.

L'homme dont l'enseignement constitue le socle de l'IA moderne a simplement remercié son public et est rentré chez lui.
