With due respect, citizens across India have been doing exactly that for years.

RWAs, schools, institutions, and communities have shown-again and again-that segregation, composting, decentralised waste systems, and zero-waste lifestyles do work.

Many of us have been part of this journey since launching Why Waste Your Waste in 2014. We have seen RWAs adopt these models early on. We have seen systems work-and we have also seen them collapse when municipal contracts and infrastructure do not support them.

So in 2026, the question is no longer whether citizens will participate.

The real question is: why, after 26 years of Solid Waste Management Rules, are our cities still struggling with waste burning, mixed waste collection, incentivizing weight over recovery, landfill dependence, rising pollution, and the lack of decentralised ward-level waste recovery .

We keep asking citizens for behavioural change.

But where is the system change that makes that behaviour sustainable at scale?

We have reviewed geotagged video evidence and a whistleblower chat indicative of STP bypassing and sewage discharge into open land behind Lavanya Apartments, Sector 81, Gurugram.

The disclosures are particularly concerning because #MCManesar is stated to have already imposed a ₹2 lakh challan in connection with the matter -apparently a year back .

Which raises a simple question:

If violations were detected and a challan was issued, why does geotagged video evidence dated 22.06.2026 indicate that the discharge appears to be continuing?

The apparent beneficiary may be a private landowner allowing wastewater to be dumped in the open. However, groundwater is a precious national and natural resource for which several laws, policies and regulatory institutions exist to ensure it remains free from contamination.

The discharge of sewage or inadequately treated wastewater is a direct threat to groundwater quality, drinking water sources, and agricultural use, with impacts spanning Gurgaon and Manesar in their entirety.

What is particularly shocking is the indication that this may have been continuing for several years. A proper inquiry and examination of records would establish the true extent and duration of the practice.

Kudos to concerned residents, including Ravi Trivedi and others, who have chosen to stick their necks out for the larger public good. Environmental violations often come to light because citizens understand -we and our families ultimately bear the direct health consequences, and as law abiding citizens we refuse to remain silent in the face of wrongdoing.

For over a decade, India has worked towards becoming Open Defecation Free. If sewage is being released into open fields and allowed to stagnate in our environment, how is this consistent with the spirit of a high priority and longest standing mission of the Prime Minister?

A full investigation is likely to reveal that such practices are not isolated incidents but part of a broader pattern of land-use and waste-disposal arrangements that require strict regulatory scrutiny and enforcement action.

Request immediate inspection, water sampling, compliance audit of the STP, groundwater assessment, and disclosure of all post-challan monitoring records.

Attached are some disturbing visuals from Siddharth NCR Green, Sector 95, Gurugram/Manesar. Residents have also shared their distress, and some residents took the initiative to escalate the matter to HSPCB seeking immediate inspection.

While we await further action from @HspcbS , it is important to highlight that basic environmental and civic sanitation norms have been compromised, resulting in unhygienic conditions in a residential setting.

Instead of addressing a potentially malfunctioning STP through corrective measures or seeking assistance from the Municipal Corporation @MCManesar or Haryana Pollution Control Board, untreated discharge into open areas has reportedly been allowed, directly impacting residents and the surrounding environment.

This requires urgent inspection, accountability, and corrective action in the interest of public health and environmental safety.

उस वीडियो में साफ दिख रहा था कि सड़क पर बना खतरनाक गड्ढा किसी बड़े हादसे को खुला निमंत्रण दे रहा है।
उस समय भी डर था कि अगर तुरंत कार्रवाई नहीं हुई, तो किसी दिन कोई बड़ी दुर्घटना जरूर होगी।
