Legendary actor James Stewart pictured before taking part in a B 52 bombing mission over Vietnam in 1966...

James Stewart is remembered by most as one of Hollywood’s greatest actors, but his military career was just as serious as his film legacy. Unlike many celebrities who served in name only, Stewart was a career military officer who flew combat missions across two wars.

He first enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941, before America entered World War II, and quickly became a bomber pilot. Stewart flew numerous combat missions over Nazi occupied Europe, eventually rising to the rank of colonel. By the end of the war, he had earned multiple decorations for bravery and leadership.

After returning to acting, Stewart remained in the Air Force Reserve. As jet aircraft replaced prop driven bombers, he continued to train and advance, eventually reaching the rank of brigadier general. In 1966, during the Vietnam War, Stewart flew aboard a B 52 Stratofortress on a bombing mission, not as a publicity stunt but as an active senior officer observing operations.

By this point, Stewart was in his late 50s, an age when most pilots had long since retired. His presence reflected both his commitment to the military and the continuity between generations of airmen. The image captures a rare overlap of Hollywood fame and real combat service, grounded in decades of discipline rather than symbolism.

James Stewart is the only major Hollywood star to have risen to the rank of general through active military service rather than honorary promotion.
