Psychologists have posited hundreds of cognitive biases over the years. A fascinating new paper argues that they all boil down to one of a handful of fundamental beliefs coupled with confirmation bias. https://t.co/uZTVbGnH3d
1/n Terrence Tao, arguable the most gifted living mathematician has tried GPT-o1 and this is his verdict: "However, this was an improvement over previous models, whose capability was closer to an actually incompetent graduate student. It may only take one or two further iterations of improved capability (and integration with other tools, such as computer algebra packages and proof assistants) until the level of "competent graduate student" is reached."

Will misinfo warning labels backfire for ppl who distrust fact-checkers? No!
Labels reduce belief in & sharing of false news even for those highly distrusting of fact-checkers - warning labels are a key tool for platforms!

A thread on the history of RL/ML based on Andy Barto's talk #RLC2024: the Reinforcement Learning Conference.
Beyond seeing friends & giving talks/panel, talking to @RichardSSutton & hearing Andy Barto revived a need for attention to historical psych/neuro influences on AI.

in my decision-making class, students do a Final Thing, rather than a term paper.
One of them was interested in "nudges", and decided to run an experiment to see if a simple label ('this comes from trees') would help reduce paper towel use in the university public restrooms.
🎉 We just hit 40 rejections (as a lab) which means time for our second #Rejection party! Scaling it up to a meal out this time 😋. Kudos for all the hard work submitting papers, applying to grants, and failing all the way! Only by trying can you success ✨️✨️ #AcademicChatter
Aristotle was the first to notice honeybees dancing. In 1927 Karl von Frisch decoded the waggle. How it works was "explained" by MV Srinivasan AM FRS in the 1990s. Except @NeuroLuebbert found his papers are junk. A 🧵 about her discovery & our report: https://t.co/K0rpDPnfop 1/

Go ahead--pick up litter, recycle, or eat a plant-based meal! Two pre-registered studies (one of them an RCT) find that engaging in pro-environmental behavior increases participants' experiences of happiness and meaning in life. @PsychScience https://t.co/K0njnMplJT
