Nie była to bitwa z Rosją. Nie była to bitwa ze Szwecją. Nie była to bitwa z Turcją.

To była bitwa Polaków z Polakami.

Rokosz Lubomirskiego przeciwko królowi Janowi Kazimierzowi. Spór o władz��, o ustrój państwa, o reformy. Jedni mówili, że ratują wolność. Drudzy, że ratują państwo. Brzmi znajomo?

13 lipca 1666 roku pod Mątwami wojska królewskie próbowały przeprawić się przez Noteć. Zostały zaatakowane przez rokoszan. Bitwa była krótka. Wojska królewskie zaczęły się wycofywać. I wtedy zaczęła się rzeź.

Nie walka. Rzeź.

Zabijano uciekających. Zabijano rannych. Zabijano jeńców. Zabijano swoich rodaków, ludzi mówiących tym samym językiem, z tego samego państwa. Zginęło kilka tysięcy ludzi, w większości już po zakończeniu walki.

Historia niczego nas nie uczy, jeśli nie chcemy jej słuchać.

Rzeczpospolita nie upadła dlatego, że była słaba militarnie. Potrafiliśmy wygrywać pod Kircholmem, pod Kłuszynem, pod Wiedniem. Upadliśmy dlatego, że nie potrafiliśmy przestać walczyć między sobą.

Najgroźniejszy moment dla każdego państwa nie jest wtedy, gdy stoi obca armia na granicy. Najgroźniejszy moment jest wtedy, gdy obywatele zaczynają nienawidzić się bardziej niż boją się wrogów zewnętrznych.

Mątwy to ostrzeżenie, że wojna domowa nie zaczyna się od strzałów. Zaczyna się od języka, od odczłowieczania przeciwnika.

A potem przychodzi moment, kiedy jest już za późno i wszyscy mówią: jak do tego doszło?

Historia Polski jest pełna zwycięstw, ale też momentów, kiedy sami sobie robiliśmy największą krzywdę. Mątwy 1666, konfederacje, liberum veto, targowica, rozbiory. Często najpierw niszczyliśmy się sami, a dopiero potem wchodzili obcy.

Państwo nie rozpada się wtedy, kiedy jedna partia wygra wybory. Państwo rozpada się wtedy, kiedy połowa obywateli przestaje uznawać drugą połowę za część wspólnoty.

Można się nie zgadzać. Można się spierać. Ale jeżeli zamienimy politykę w wojnę plemienną, to prędzej czy później skończy się to tak, jak wiele razy w naszej historii.

Bitwa pod Mątwami powinna być obowiązkową lekcją w każdej polskiej szkole. Nie jako historia bitwy, tylko jako historia tego, jak państwo zaczyna przegrywać samo ze sobą.

Bo największym zagrożeniem dla Polski w historii bardzo często nie byli obcy. Największym zagrożeniem dla Polski byliśmy my sami.

Można wygrać wszystkie wybory, wszystkie spory i wszystkie bitwy, a mimo to przegrać państwo.

Obudźmy się, zanim znowu będzie za późno.
