Spectral Imaging Simulations for Planetary Surface Exploration // UK Space Agency PDRA, NHM // Team Member for ESA ExoMars CaSSIS, PanCam & Enfys and JAXA MMX
I made it to Vienna! Excited to be here for #EGU2025 - I’m talking on Thursday afternoon in the Mars session on applying our Supervised Spectral Parameter Learning method to @ExoMars_CaSSIS data.
Read on in the paper to find how hematite sensitive spectral parameters used in equivalent systems compared,
and have a play with the SPTK software, that we are continuing to expand for other problems in multispectral sampling: https://t.co/aOdiYsgw1S
For development, we searched for hematite against the background of basalts and clays expected at Oxia Planum. We found LOTS of spectral parameter combinations that achieved better than 95% accuracy. The best used 6 filters, but acc. >99% could still be achieved with just 2!
...and then lists all pair combinations of these. We compute the optimal linear discriminant for each pair combination, and then rank these by how well they separate the target from the background, in terms of a distance metric and accuracy metric.
Rather than applying our dimension reduction to the full filter set, we applied it to pairs of spectral parameters. Our software (https://t.co/F5ip59mGbn) computes all band depth, ratio, shoulder height and slope spectral parameters afforded by a filter set,
We recently published part II of our preparation for @ExoMarsPanCam papers!
We developed a method and software for choosing a minimal number of vis/nir filters to downlink for the discrimination of a particular material against an expected background.

We took advantage of public spectral libraries via https://t.co/t5G8XrZ2HS to build a labelled training set, so we could use Linear Discriminant Analysis, the supervised sister to the well known Principal Component Analysis dimension reduction.
TONIGHT we are the @thelexington for 137 playing their second ever show! Feat. Larry Stabbins, @adrianutley, @sebrochford & Jim Barr.
Support from another brand new act The Sick Man of Europe. Loads of tickets sold but still a few on the door.

Next up the Winton Award for #Astronomy is presented to Dr Chris Lovell.
@chrisclovell is an exceptionally promising post-doctoral scientist whose work is being used to understand some of the earliest forming galaxies discovered by @NASAWebb.

the answer was @superflyrecords on Rue Notre Dame de Nazareth! A very well curated selection with nice and short descriptors. It was hard not to buy everything.
