@thesamparr One of my greatest eras was when I lived in a fully-furnished rented apartment in Chicago.
It was weird to tell people I was 35 and didn't own a bed, couch, or TV.
But now I've got a house, many beds, many couches, and two TVs, and the upside is small or non-existent.
@farhip "Owner hired the wrong leaders" is oldest, most tired trope in news.
There are no right leaders for newspapers. Why?
1) Few people want/like traditional news
2) Everything online is a) very niche (i.e. Substack, YouTube) or b) winner take all and NYT takes all for trad news.
@thesamparr I've heard some companies do an "easy out" ... basically resign and we'll give you a generous severance.
It's brilliant because it helps managers/founders act quickly rather than keep someone around for a long time avoiding the hard conversation.
Make it easy on both sides!
@STLChrisH This is a great post. Tons of insight and clear thinking.
On the build v. buy question ... interesting that the logic we've used for 15+ years holds even in the case of AI ... build if it's a core competency and provides advantage, otherwise buy.
Thanks for sharing!
@thesamparr That's one of my favorite books, and a bestseller, and yet i feel like it was buried under Atomic Habits.
Love to see the love ...
And Duhigg!
A while ago I was in a Colorado mountain town when I heard a guy working on a house across cuss out an employee.
"How long does it take you to hang a window?" he shouted. "Are you a fucking framer or not?"
And all I could think was, "Man, I bet yelling at that dude felt great"
@bryanhasling I'm glad you just recently signed up!
I've got one in mind, but haven't pulled the trigger just yet (scheduling, nagging injuries, etc.). It's an end of year event, so time isn't critical, but still gotta get my mind right.
Thanks for sharing!
@theryandreyer Rings by far.
I love them and they double as a trapeze for my 5 and 8 years olds.
Gonna put a second set (plus monkey bars) in the basement so they can swing somewhere other than my office/gym.
@Seanfrank Only if people are brands
@ShaanVP's Five Tweet Tuesday gets an open every single time.
The rest have fallen off, including prolific, insightful people like Prof G. and others.
@thesamparr 1) Lots of investors — and there are tons out there — don't have any special insight into who will win in AI.
2) The winner take all AI companies are likely already past the angel stage.
3) If you are/believe the above, then Media and DTC seem like relatively AI-proof segments
@dharmesh Yes.
Same reason you gotta learn math in school ... we have calculators, but it's kinda nice (and beneficial!) to know how to think and solve problems.
@ReubenR80027912 Pretty sure GCC isn't going all in on "regime change," which is a big, unpredictable endeavor.
They want to go back to the status quo of the last 30 years, in which they get rich AF while worrying only occasionally about a shitty neighbor.
@ElijahSchaffer@nytimes Next time you wanna fake a reporter reaching out to you, here's a believable text:
I'm working on a piece about XYZ for the NYT. I'd like your perspective. Can we get some time to chat?
No one writes five-paragraph SMS messages, dingus.
