So while everybody is trying to discover how much damage was done by the US strike against Iran, or how much retaliatory damage was done to US bases by Iran’s reply, it’s time we start asking the bigger question:
What comes next?
OK, so President Trump got angry because allegedly a US helicopter got shot down, causing no casualties, and so he struck, according to Fox News, 20 targets in a “proportional“ response.
Predictably, Iran launched a retaliation of its own, and it’s unclear yet how many U.S. targets it’s struck.
But whatever that number, President Trump will now have to decide whether he lets that one go and does nothing in response, or ramps up yet again.
It would obviously be illogical if he attacked 20 targets in Iran for a single helicopter, but then did nothing because of getting multiple hits in multiple locations by Iran.
So in all probability, he will come under enormous pressure to respond yet again, and this time even stronger than Iran’s counterstrike.
You see where this is going, right?
There is no offramp, there is no logic, it’s just throwing missiles down range, it’s just satisfying a desire in a lust, risking an explosion of the war in the region, and along with it, devastating our allies and the global energy markets in this part of the world.
It is a profoundly bad decision to risk all of that, over the allegations that a single helicopter was taken down by enemy fire, in a hostile zone.
Once satellites other drones have a chance to find out the damage done in the first round of strike/counterstrike, we’ll have a better idea what’s coming, but we are definitely in a worse position now than we were before these strikes.
