🚨 EXCLUSIVE: J.R.R. Tolkien once said that he first came up with the Ring-verse while taking a bath. In the early drafts, there were also many different variations of the poem, and even the numbers of the Rings differed significantly from the final version.

He spoke about it in an interview featured in Tolkien in Oxford, a BBC2 television documentary broadcast in 1968:

“I invented that in the bath, I remember. Yes, I remember inventing that in one of the baths, inventing it when I was having a bath, in 20 Northmoor Road. I still remember kicking the sponge out of the bath when I got [the last line] and thought, ‘all right, that will do,’ and jumped out.”

The Ring-verse narrated by Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) in the prologue of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is a cinematic adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's original Ring-verse.
