My feed this evening seemed to exist in two parallel worlds.
In the Ukrainian one, there were photos of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra engulfed in flames.
In the American one, there were cage fights on the White House grounds celebrating Donald Trump’s birthday and U.S. Flag Day.
Take a guess which event will make the front pages of American media tomorrow. Which videos will dominate social media feeds. What Americans will be talking about first and foremost, regardless of their political affiliation.
russia did not launch a massive ballistic missile attack on Kyiv by accident on this particular night. The Kremlin understood perfectly well that Washington would be preoccupied with celebrations and that media attention would be focused elsewhere. The spectacle on the White House lawn overshadowed even reports that the United States had reached a peace agreement with Iran, at least for one evening. On American Twitter, one of the most discussed moments right now is a fighter claiming live on stage that Michelle Obama is a man.
Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine are trying to break through the noise with photos and videos from Kyiv, but algorithms favor spectacle over tragedy.
Special thanks to the members of Congress, diplomats, religious leaders, and journalists who have shared these images and stories. Because of them, what happened in Kyiv still has a chance to appear in American feeds as well.

Good morning and Happy Monday to everyone who agrees that it is dumb for trump to claim victory for ending a war HE STARTED, which leaves us worse off than the deal President Obama had.
The Strait of Hormuz was open BEFORE your war of choice, idiot.
Elizabeth Warren’s proposed 3% tax on people with over $100M in wealth would generate $30B in revenue each year on Elon Musk’s fortune alone. That’s about how much the US spends each year on affordable housing subsidies.
Tax. The. Rich.
The resurgence of measles, whooping cough, rotavirus, bacterial meningitis, and severe pneumonia is an abject failure of health policy.
We are relearning the lessons we have already paid the price for.
In the USA in 1943 they produced a film 'Don't be a Sucker' about fascism.
It perfectly explains Nigel Farage, Donald Trump, Elon Musk and the entire Right.
As everything goes wrong for Russia due to Putin's war, the swans are warming up. 🎶🦢🦢🦢🦢
Russian MPs are openly and publicly warning of social collapse, saying the economy cannot withstand the war, and blaming the Kremlin for the current problems.
Dance little swans, dance.
Biden at 80. Trump at 80.
One rode bikes, worked out daily, passed historic legislation, released yearly physicals, and answered endless questions about his age and health.
The other falls asleep in public, rambles through speeches, looks visibly swollen, and has reportedly taken multiple cognitive tests ordered by doctors.
Guess which one the media treated like a five-alarm health crisis. 🙄
Hard to believe this is from a guy who inherited $413 million from his father only to declare bankruptcy 6 times before convincing an NBC producer to bail him out by creating a fictional show that he was a successful businessman.
It is frankly embarrassing that a sitting U.S. Vice President is unaware of one of the most elementary facts of World War II. Nazi Germany did not negotiate an end to World War II. The war in Europe ended with Germany’s unconditional surrender after total military defeat and the collapse of the regime in May 1945.
Trump wants to throw out lawful votes, disenfranchise U.S. citizens and subvert the outcomes of elections entirely.
Don’t let him get away with it.
“Stop trying to meet him halfway,” @marceelias says. “There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.”
A reminder that Russia is waging a terrorist war on Ukraine, and a reminder that standing by and watching are the richest nations on Earth, controlling the most powerful military alliance in history, an alliance created specifically to stop Russia in Europe. Sickening.
@MeanwhileInUA MANY years ago John McCain was the first person to draw MY attention to just ONE plausible deduction for Putin's (let's say) 'aggression' towards Ukraine AND now almost a decade later Ms Applebaum HAS added HER information which logically reinforces Mr McCain's earlier theory!!
Putin didn't invade Ukraine because of NATO. He invaded because Ukrainians were proving democracy works.
Historian and Pulitzer Prize winner Anne Applebaum puts it plainly: Putin looked at Ukraine's democratic movement and thought, "If they can do it in Ukraine, then people could do it in Russia. So I need to crush this."
That's the real threat Ukraine posed. Not missiles. Not borders. A working democracy next door.
Applebaum frames the war as a fault line between the democratic and autocratic worlds. Russia isn't just trying to take territory. It's trying to erase Ukraine as a nation, reduce it to a colony, and send a message to every country that the post-1945 rules of Europe no longer apply.
Those rules were simple: no invasions, no wars, borders don't change by force. Russia understood exactly what it was breaking when it crossed into Ukraine.
McGowan: Can just let me speak for like one fricken second, bro?
Rothman: Sorry.
McGowan: There was a deal and Trump came in and said, I can get a better deal. And he ripped it up and he didn't get a better deal. And then he went into that country at the request of another country's leader, and he spent $50 billion and killed thousands of civilians and at least 13 American soldiers and hundreds of American soldiers are injured. We've hurt our bases. We've hurt our radar. People hate the country now. We had a president say that we're going to destroy an entire civilization…. That does not make you a good negotiator. That doesn't make you a good guy. It makes you psychotic.
Trump has in effect finished NATO off whether out of stupidity or subservience to Putin.
He has done so by talking about leaving NATO incessantly & talking about NATO as them.
He has unacceptably insulted NATO members.
An ambassador who spoke like that about his or her host country would be declared persona non grata.
He has stopped all aid to Ukraine, although the main threat to Europe is Russia.
He has sucked up to Putin & even Lukashenko at every turn & even invited him to the US.
He has ended many sanctions on Russia enriching Russia.
He is working hard for breaking up the EU by supporting Brexit & Orban, just like Putin.
Trump is no ally of Europe or Canada but a threat.
Europeans hesitate what to do. The softies want to wait until Trump is gone.
Europe will be better off breaking fast with the USA.
EU defense budgets exceed $500 bn this year, three times Russia's military budget.
Europe does not need an unreliable US in Europe.
Kick out the superfluous US military bases!
