By the end of next year, 99% of discoveries in math and science will be made by SI.
There will be no point in humans claiming they discovered something without using SI, since no one will believe them.
The most feared soldiers in medieval Europe were dairy farmers. Their enemies had a name for them, and it was meant as an insult. They called them the cow-Swiss.
The cantons of the high Alps had almost no land that would grow grain. What they had was summer pasture. From the 1300s the people there turned over almost entirely to cattle. They lived on milk, butter, cheese and meat, drove their surplus animals over the passes to sell in Italy, and bought in what little bread they wanted.
Their overlords were the Habsburgs. In 1315 a duke rode in with an army of armoured knights to bring them to heel. About 1,500 herdsmen caught the column in a narrow pass beside a lake and destroyed it. At Sempach in 1386 they did it again, on open ground, and killed the duke. In the 1470s they wiped out three armies of the richest prince in Europe, one after another, and left him dead in a frozen ditch.
Contemporaries could not get over the size and stamina of these men. Every king in Europe wanted to hire them. In 1506 the Pope chose them as his bodyguard, and they are still at the gates of the Vatican in the same uniform.
The Germans to the north mocked them as cowherds and milkers, and made cruder jokes than that. The Swiss went to war over the insult in 1499 and won that as well.
Machiavelli, who had seen them fight, put it in a single phrase. The Swiss, he wrote, are the most armed and the most free.
They had no king, no nobles and no wheat. Europe laughed at them for living on cows, and for 200 years could not beat them.
If you want to understand what really motivates people, ask them their perception of god, whether they believe in one or not.
If they say he is a punisher to be feared, they are most likely inclined toward cruelty.
If they say god is a forgiving and helpful entity that wants the best for you, then you can assume that is their general approach to life.
If they say god wants us to enjoy life and be happy, then they are probably pretty fun to party with.
“Cruel men believe in a cruel God, and use their belief to excuse their cruelty. Only kindly men believe in a kindly God, and they would be kindly in any case. Men tend to have the beliefs that suit their passions.”
— Bertrand Russell, London Calling
"According to a report released in July by the American Federation for Children (@schoolchoicenow), 9 in 10 students will be eligible for the program, or 51.7 million out of 56.4 million public and private school students."
I’m French. I want to talk to Americans who are about to vote Democrat. Not to insult you. To warn you.
I come from your future.
In France we did everything your progressive politicians promise. Free healthcare, free college, generous welfare, strong unions, heavy regulation, high taxes on the rich, a state that takes care of everything. Public spending close to 57% of GDP, one of the highest on the planet. On paper, it’s the dream.
Here’s what it looks like from the inside. France hasn’t passed a balanced budget since 1974. Our debt is above 3,300 billion euros. Interest on that debt is becoming one of the biggest items in the national budget. Our hospitals are collapsing despite record funding. Our schools rank lower every year. Young people with degrees can’t afford an apartment in the city they were born in. Our best engineers leave for London, Zurich and San Francisco. And the rich you wanted to tax? They left too, and took the jobs with them.
The promise was protection. The result is stagnation.
The worst part is that nobody in France voted for decline. Every single step sounded generous, compassionate, reasonable. One more program. One more regulation. One more tax to fund it. Each step alone makes sense. Fifty years of them, and you wake up in a country that can no longer build a nuclear plant on time or keep its streets safe.
I love America because it’s the one place on earth where people still believe they can build something from nothing. I came to Silicon Valley as a self-taught kid and it changed my life. That spirit is the most precious thing your country has.
Before you vote, ask yourself one question: is the program you’re voting for making America more like America, or more like France?
Trust me. You don’t want to be France.
Zuckerberg just described the near-future of computing, and it has nothing to do with screens.
His argument: once AI holds deep, persistent context about a person’s life and goals, chatbots and search boxes stop being the main way work gets done.
There are only three ways this plays out:
1. Stay on today’s chat-and-click tools
2. Build agents that are shallow and forgetful
3. Create agents that are deeply embedded in how someone lives
For years the default has been #1 and #2. Context, not raw model power, is now closing that gap.
Meta reaches roughly 3 billion people. Personal agents are the foundation for its next wave of products.
“Within five years, pretty much everyone is going to have an agent that intimately understands your goals and can help you get stuff done.” - Zuck
The screen-and-prompt era finally has an expiration date.
What will solve robotics isn't robotics: it's general SI models.
SI models will handle perception, problem-solving, decision-making, and planning, then control robots, drones, aircraft, cars, trucks, construction equipment, and weapon systems.
