Pope Leo XIV had dinner July 4 at the private residence of U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Brian Burch, the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See said.

The dinner took place at the ambassador’s residence on the Janiculum Hill in Rome on the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence.

“I am deeply honored to celebrate this special day with a fellow American and the Bishop of Rome,” Burch said.

The pope’s visit came after a day trip to Lampedusa, where he addressed migration and prayed for those who have died crossing the Mediterranean. Images of Pope Leo XIV standing on the island’s rocks and looking out over the sea circulated widely after the visit.

After returning to the Vatican, the pope went to the ambassador’s residence for the evening meal. Photos released by the embassy showed Pope Leo XIV with Burch and members of his family.

On X, the official account of the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See posted that “the Ambassador and his family presented the Holy Father with a USA World Cup jersey, a commemorative Freedom 250 baseball, and a homemade apple pie. Pope Leo confirmed he is rooting for the country of his birth in the World Cup.”

Earlier in the liturgy, Pope Leo blessed and imposed the pallia—white woolen bands bestowed upon 35 newly appointed metropolitan archbishops as signs of their communion with the Successor of Peter and their mission to shepherd Christ's flock.

Greeting the Orthodox delegation, Pope Leo called Patriarch Bartholomew his "dear brother" and prayed that Saints Peter and Paul "may sustain us on our journey of communion in the footsteps of the Savior." Their shared prayer at the Apostle's tomb stands as a powerful witness to the Catholic and Orthodox Churches' continuing commitment to seek the unity for which Christ prayed: "that they may all be one."
