🔸 July 12 - Panagia Tricherousa 🫱 🔸

Yesterday, we also commemorated the Synaxis of the Wonderworking icon of Panagia Tricherousa (“The All-Holy Mother of Three Hands”).

During the First Byzantine Iconoclasm (726-787), the use of holy icons in churches and homes was prohibited by the imperial authorities. These iconoclastic policies were accompanied by the destruction of religious images, and the persecution of those who supported the veneration of icons. At that time, Saint John of Damascus, one of the greatest defenders of the holy icons against the iconoclasts, was able to write his apologetic treatises free from the persecution of the Byzantine authorities, since he was living in Muslim controlled Damascus.

Unable to prevent John from writing his defences of icons, the cunning iconoclast emperor Leo Ill the Isaurian (717-740) falsely informed the Muslim caliph of Damascus that John had been committing treasonous acts against him. The caliph gave orders to cut off John’s hand and for it to be taken to the marketplace. In the evening, Saint John, having asked the caliph for his cut-off hand, put it to its joint and fell to the ground before the icon of the Mother of God. He begged the Panagia to heal this hand, which he had used to write his defence of the faith.

After a long prayer, he fell asleep and saw in a dream the Mother of God who promised him quick healing. Having awakened trom sleep, Saint John saw that his hand was miraculously restored. To show his gratitude for this miracle, St John fashioned a hand out of silver and placed it on the icon below the hand of the Panagia which held the infant Christ. From this the icon received its name “Of Three Hands”.

Saint of Damascus accepted monasticism at the Monastery of Saint Savvas the Sanctified (today known as Mar Saba in the West Bank) and there bestowed his wonderworking icon. When Saint Sava, the first Archbishop of Serbia, visited the Lavra in the 13th century, the monks presented the icon “Of Three Hands” to him as a gift. Saint Sava brought this miraculous icon to the Hilandar Serbian Monastery on Mount Athos where it remains to this day.
