In all eight seasons of The Andy Griffith Show there has only ever been one holiday themed episode. “The Christmas Story” first broadcast on December 19, 1960 tells the story of Andy transforming the jail into a joyous Christmas party, and enlisting Barney as Santa Claus.

If Mt. Airy is the Real Mayberry then Gene Rees is the real Andy. He’s lived in Mt. Airy his whole life and embodies all the best qualities of the star. Check out the film to see why Rees is so beloved by the town he calls home and the role he plays in transforming the downtown.

Other than Andy, two of the most interesting people to have ever lived in Mt. Airy are conjoined twins Eng and Chang Bunker. They moved to Mt. Airy in 1839 to escape the limelight of people interested in their condition. They married two women and ended up fathering 21 children!
