Stephen,Your claim only holds if baptism is a post-Pentecost add-on, a sacred extra that sits loosely on top of nature. Van Dorn argued the opposite in Waters of Creation.

Baptism is not new. It is the sign God has used from the waters of Genesis 1 onward to bring His people into a new creation, finding its clearest sacramental expression in the priestly covenant.

Baptism comes from baptism, not from circumcision or from some later casuistic law.

That continuity means the Christian faith is not adventitious to the natural ends of civil society. The same God who ordered nature also ordered the waters that set a people apart as a royal priesthood. Piety therefore has a real, public role in securing virtue; it is not a private supernatural plane disconnected from earthly duty.

Religious liberty still needs a philosophical account, but it cannot be framed as if the church’s ordinances arrived late and now threaten to replace nature. They fulfill and elevate what was already there.

The reason why states like Texas are declining is the fact that many Texans believe that "conservative values" are an acceptable substitute for Christian Morals. They are not the same thing. Texans need to repent and believe the gospel. Then they will know how to expel lawlessness.

Awesome idea AJ. Tourism with a higher purpose. As a missionary kid myself, I would LOVE see American Christians visit faraway lands like PNG, where many of us supported missionaries in bringing the gospel to all tribes, tongues and nations. Imagine PNG, once a pagan nation, now a confessional Christian nation. Americans could learn so much! Thank you. Probably 10 days. Anything longer than that becomes difficult for folks to take off work.

Brother, you are right to refuse the idea that God prizes our autonomy more than He hates evil, and you are right that His decree includes purposes we often cannot see.

Yet the deeper trouble is that we have no right to sit in judgment and decide which account makes Him look less monstrous.

God is His own theodicy, evil serves His glory by His sovereign will while we remain fully responsible, and any defense that begins with human freedom as the ultimate good simply continues the original claim of autonomy instead of bowing before the mystery of the self-attesting God of Scripture.

I understand your frustration. As preachers, we are bombarded with messages from every armchair pastor, theologian and thinker. My frustration (which is certainly not binding on you or anyone) is with pastors who use the command to "preach the word" to ignore the battles being fought in front of us. IMHO, your post communicated that vibe. But again, that's your choice, not mine or anyone else's.
