K-2 universal screening for risk of dyslexia is the first step in ensuring access to literacy for CA students. 40 states already require universal screening for risk of dyslexia, but not CA. I urge @SenJoshBecker@AsmDianePapan to vote YES on SB 691. #YesOnSB691
So why is ‘said’ not spelled *sayed? The history is complex, but thanks to a consult with @DannyBate, we have it sorted.
Telling the tale of a word’s history helps Ss and adults understand the spelling.

What can help solidify the spelling 'said' for these kindergarteners? Hearing the tale of the word's history. It may seem extraneous, but that's where real understanding is found. Plus who doesn't want to learn through #stories? #thehfwproject#tellthetale@wordtorque
The K's first pass learning 'said'. They loved seeing the i/y connection on the vowel hand, as well as the new <ay> digraph. Tap-spelling the words revealed they'll need practice to remember the <ai> in 'said'! #thehfwproject@wordtorque#spelling
@larissaphillip I teach them by looking at GPCs, even the unexpected ones. Then I share a story based in etymology that explains *why* and offers meaningful connections to other words. Kids are riveted by these stories, then move to all important practice. https://t.co/BDTy43pP2G
Analyzing a word's structure and making meaningful connections to other related words can reveal surprises! Did you ever think about this <y> as a suffix? #morphology + #etymology@wordtorque
Some Ss were asking about the <y> in 'very'. It comes from the Latin verus 'true'. So if something is very big - it's 'truly' big. If you think about related words like verify and veracity we can analyze the <y> as a suffix. #tellthetale#wordinquiry#thehfwproject@RebeccaSWI
Ever wondered what the <o> is doing in the word people? This word comes from the Latin word populus and the <o> tells the tale of its history and links it to our words population and popular. #tellthetale#thehfwproject#wordinquiry@RebeccaSWI https://t.co/w8bqOuSdBx

Can I get an amen to this?! Building true learner agency is messy. We need to learn to be the personal trainer of our students’ cognition. Only the learner learns. Too many of our students are socialized into a pedagogy of compliance.
